Fic Meme Day 6

Jan 02, 2015 01:43

It's totally appropriate to continue a meme I last touched in OCTOBER, shut up.

Every day (consecutively or not), post about one of your fanworks:
1. Something old
2. Something new
3. Something you made for someone else
4. Something you made just for yourself
5. Something for a large fandom/pairing/character
6. Something for a small fandom/pairing/character
7. Something you're just really proud of

Let me tell you, the Teen Titans animated series fandom is WAY smaller than it should be.

I almost decided to talk about my other Teen Titans fic, Live Without, which I really do love and hope to continue working on some day, maybe after I finally finish I'll Be Yours (A Love Story). But after some thought, I went with Reconciliation. It's not my most favorite thing I've ever written, but it deserves a mention, for at least a couple of reasons.

In 2010, I was reaching the end of my second era of fanfic writing (the first being the anime fanfic in the time and the place that was FanFiction.Net). My only active fandom, Metanoia, was in its death throes. My creative energies were primarily funneled into RPing (Robin, from Teen Titans). My fic wordcount for a 10 month period was less than 1.5k. I was getting into reading comics, especially Batman comics, in a HUGE way, and also getting into reading Batfamily fanfics. I was working in a call center, reading books between calls and on my public transportation commutes (and tearing through novels at a rate I hadn't since before college).

A couple of very important things happened then: my call center's no-reading policy became stricter, and I was moved to a desk within direct sight-lines of my manager. I was BORED. I was jealous of a dude in my row who had art skills, and passed the time with amazing sketches. "I can't draw," I thought. ".....But I can write!"

Reconciliation was born, gleefully hand-written on company stationery. Again, it's... not the best thing I've ever written, but I loved writing it. I mean, just to be writing again, but also it was born from a canon plot-hole itch I'd been dying to scratch for YEARS. And it's silly, it's cute, and it kick-started the next era of my writing. The next 6 months saw Live Without, I'll Be Yours (A Love Story), I Would Keep Myself, Do You Know How Many Times, and Best Laid Plans, born from a potent mix of work boredom, intense iPod listening, and a brain constantly teeming with Batstuff, and scribbled madly by hand during lunch breaks and while waiting for or riding on buses and trains. I've gone through a couple of fandom shifts and real life changes since then, but any amount of writing I've been doing for the past few years probably owes a lot to Reconciliation, the little fic that could. :)

Also, of my AO3 posted works, it ranks 11/41 by kudos, and a stunning FOURTH by bookmarks and THIRD by kudos/hits ratio. ...FOURTH AND THIRD. I think this may have something to do with the fact that there are a total of 504 works in the Teen Titans animated series tag on AO3. Medium-sized fish in a small pond, and all that. ...I just checked, and sorted by kudos it's ranked 40/504. OH TEEN TITANS, YOUR FANDOM IS SO TINY AND SAD. But Teen Titans is awesome, and people who like Teen Titans are awesome by definition, so I welcome ALL 512 OF MY HITS, and I am proud to contribute something of worth to the community, to make those awesome people happier in this desolate fanfic wasteland. ♥

And that is the story of the fic that, more than anything else I've written, causes feelings of fondness and mild hilarity with every kudos notification in my inbox.
