I've been quite happy with the Kindle app on iOS. Everything on my i(whatever) devices just seems to work more of the time than it did on my android/windows stuff. I still use a windows machine at work, but at home, I'm all iOS. Yes, it does seem like you pay a bit more for the device at first (iPad is more expensive than Kindle), but then it all just works and app or software upgrades have never been an issue for me with any of my devices - I just get the notice that I need to update stuff and then I update and all is well. My mom has a Kindle and she seems to always be having issues with it. If you want to use Powerpoint or Excel, it seems like a Surface works well for that although I have found their keyboards to be really weird and fiddly - the place where I go for spin class makes us check in on Surface and I swear the only people who can easily use them are people who work at Microsoft. wow - that got a little tl dr; If you can afford a bit more upfront investment, I say get an iPad.
I haven't had any problems with my kindle app, aside from the fact that I haven't been able to update it for over two years due to my android OS being geriatric.
I don't have a problem with apps. I just want a reliable tablet that facilitates reading comix and epubs. I don't want to be tethered solely to kindle for reading books.
Naomi has an Asus Memo Pad (Android OS) with a Kindle app on it. Was relatively cheap as tablets go, is fairly tough and does all the basics pretty well. It probably isn't the speediest one around, or the most well equipped, but depends on your needs.
Generally a good basic one - they are basically the Google Nexus tablets but with slightly different specs.
But it's old and its firmware/software doesn't allow updates.
I just want a reliable tablet that will connect to the interwebs and through which I can read epubs, kindle, and comix, and be able to browse the web without constantly losing connection or having to bypass "the security cert for this site has expired" if I can get past that at all.
Sounds like a new/nearly new Memo Pad would suit you fine then... N's (an ME176 - I just checked) cost around £100 just over a year ago, so would imagine US costs are probably similar to that now. If it can survive clumsy children playing with it, I'd count it as fairly tough!
I think it'll probably be shipped with Android 4.something, and I'm fairly sure you can upgrade them past that.
