You have no idea how many Flan Princesses I had to kill to get one Pink Tail.
On the other hand, I've also managed to get two Yellow Tails and two Red Tails, which translate to, respectively, Onion Gloves and Onion Swords. Onion equipment strength is determined by formulae based on a character's level, so their usefulness tends to vary. I'm not too impressed with the Onion Gloves, as while they improve evasion (magic and otherwise) and spirit, they do nothing for actual defense. They can be equipped by anyone in the final party. Onion Swords, on the other hand, are monstrous damage-dealers at high levels, but only equippable by Kain and Cecil.
In other news, Cecil + Onion Sword + Draw Attacks + Counter:Kick = MASSIVE CARNAGE. Even for the Flan Princesses.
(Flan Princesses are annoying because they're very rare - they only appear in one room in the final dungeon, although you can get them to appear every time you use a Siren, which calls up the rarest enemy in an area - and because their first move is always Samba de Flan, which berserks everyone in your party who isn't wearing Crystal equipment. Sadly, the Crystal Rings you can occasionally steal from Red Dragons do not count as Crystal equipment, which pretty much leaves Cecil as the only character not berserked (I'm not sure if anyone else can even equip Crystal equipment). I usually just have Cecil use a Remedy on Rosa just in case, and then let everyone else beat the hell out of the flan while Cecil defends and Rosa heals and/or Prays as necessary. Flan Princesses always attack in threes. They will also repeat their Samba de Flan attack at intervals if you let the battle go on too long.)
Pink Tails, incidentally, have a 0.4% chance of dropping. You can only get them from Flan Princesses. If you completely explore all the maps in the game, you can get the Treasure Hunter augment, which when equipped raises the chance of getting a Pink Tail to... 1.6%. Pink Tails get you the best armor in the game, though, which I believe carries over to a New Game Plus. I think. I hope.
The other colored Tails have the same percentage chance of dropping. They go as follows:
1. Yellow Dragon -> Yellow Tail -> Onion Gloves
2. Green Dragon -> Green Tail -> Onion Helm
3. Thunder Dragon -> Blue Tail -> Onion Shield
4. Armored Fiend -> Black Tail -> Onion Armor
5. Red Dragon -> Red Tail -> Onion Sword
6. Flan Princess -> Pink Tail -> Adamant Armor
Adamant Armor raises all your stats by 15 and halves elemental damage. If you equip a Cursed Ring along with it, you'll lose the +15 to all stats (Cursed Rings subtract 15 points from all stats) but gain elemental absorption in place of elemental damage. If I can get another Pink Tail, I'll probably do this with Edge, who frankly needs all the help he can get. The first set went to Cecil, though, because he has the Draw Attacks augment equipped and so needs the extra defense (because enemies direct all single-target attacks to him and largely ignore the rest of the party while he's still alive).
Onion Armor is slightly weaker than Adamant Armor, lacks the elemental resistances and most of the stat increases, AND requires you to fight Armored Fiends, which like to self-destruct and deny you experience and rewards and possibly kill off whomever they hit while they're exploding, besides. Also, Onion Armor's defense tops out at 99 to Adamant Armor's 100, although it does raise the character's Int stat by (Character Level)/3.
Red Dragons are brutal but lucrative, as you can occasionally steal Crystal Rings from them, and they can drop Wyvern Lances and Dragon Gloves, which you can turn around and sell for cash if you get multiples, which I did while farming for Red Tails. I'm guessing you can have Edge throw the Wyvern Lances, as well. They're also great in terms of experience and money; however, you have to cast Berserk on them as soon as possible in order to avoid their Thermal Ray attack, which hits the entire party and can wipe them out entirely in a few hits if you're not careful (especially Edge - ninja's made of cardboard, I swear).
Actual game update probably coming sometime later, not necessarily today. I'm at the endgame.
