A life update followed by a rant

Once again I get on the computer and my nomes start overreacting to something (i.e. allergies). Could I be allergic to the internet? I had a whole list of things that I wanted to write about, but unfortunately I've spent so much time thinking about what I wanted to say that now I'm bored with the topics ( Read more... )

I, too, wish we could evolve beyond the two party system. The more sophisticated a nation becomes, the more nuanced the various political positions become. And I will say this for our media-obsessed culture; Our love of multiple options (on our cable channel line-up, our grocery store shelves, and everywhere else) makes it likely that the two parties will explode into many smaller niche parties. This seems to me a good idea... then the smaller parties will mirror the many lobbying and special interest groups behind those political parties. It might not look pretty, but at least it would be more accurate than our current deception.

Just look at our two-party sham. We have such a spectrum of beliefs within the two parties that they only seem united out of fear of going Independent (and getting marginalized). The two party system worked in the past, but I think it impedes a healthy operation of civic duty. How many moderates have to restrain their own gag reflexes and put on a happy face just to stay in the good graces of their more extreme party leaders?

Granted much of the current woes could also be fixed if the two parties reformed around different values... rather than trying to rally around old talking points that reflect outdated ideological platforms. Whether its through a re-vamped two party system or a multi-party system, I'd like to see some change.

I agree except for the moderate bit--I feel like both parties, at least on the upper levels, are too "moderate". Maybe not in an ideological sense of open-minded and able to understand different perspectives; but diffinetely in the sense of getting all their money from the same sources and thus having the same ultimate interests. Nothing like living at home and then moving out again (at least on weekends) to remind a person that whoever has the money has ultimate influence. So while both sides seem to spout a lot of ideology as a way of attracting different groups, I believe their loyalty isn't to those ideas as much as it is to money and power. Maybe I'm too cynical.
