Nate was casually minding his own business when a blur of pink ran past him. Instead of heading into the coffee shop, curiosity got the better of him. He turned the corner and stopped in his tracks.
"Did I just witness a felon? This seems like pretty serious business."
When Zoey looked up she was still a little breathless from laughing so hard. It took her a second to piece together what he was saying.
"I think there has to be a certain price before it's a felony. This is just fancy construction paper." She spun the giant pink atrocity a bit, marveling at how much smaller it seemed when it was hanging in the cafe.
"I have no idea what I'm going to do with this..."
"I'll burn it!" She sounded entirely too gleeful about that but waved the heart pretty soon after. "Actually, that's too messy."
For a moment or two, Zoey had to think up a legitimate reason for her actions. Sometimes, being impulsive was a giant pain. Finally, she set her most serious expression; it was actually fairly fierce.
"I'm protesting the mass commercialization of romantic entanglements."
Rolling her eyes, she shook her head. "Of course not. They have to have a sales gimmick all the time."
Why she hated the whole Valentine's Day concept was a mystery, but Zoey suspected it was the amount of pink she was forced to endure. "Try working in a dance studio. We'll have the things up as soon as everyone is back from Winter Hols. It's a disaster of pink."
"I don't know how you stand it. No wonder you turned to a life of crime," he said, nodding towards the giant heart. He couldn't help but let a grin spread on his lips.
"I think we need to find a way to destroy this. Symbolically and all to make some sort of statement."
Zoey was not exactly known for smiling for arbitrary reasons. Maybe it was the rush from her little bit of thievery, but she smiled a little in response.
"Symbolically? You better have ideas. I'm shite with symbolism."
"I think I like your idea of fire...if we set it off in the quad..."
Nate was always quiet one. He was happy falling into the shadows of his more radical and impulsive friends. But there was always something about Zoey that inspired him.
At that, Zoey tilted her head and gave him a disbelieving look. She lowered the heart so it was completely out of her face and she could give Nate the full weight of her raised eyebrows.
"Wait. You, Nate Miller, are actually advocating for starting fires in the quad? Really?"
"Nobody will ever suspect us," he assured her, taking the giant heart. It was lighter than he imaged. "That's the good thing about being well, good...nobody realizes you can be bad."
"You're right. Maybe I shouldn't be seen with you," he said, smirking. It always amazed Nate that he shared friends with Riley O'Dannihugh. They were nothing a like. Or, well, maybe they were. After all, Nate was about to set a giant heart on fire.

"Why'd you take it, anyway?"

"All that stuff makes you nauseous too? I thought I'd have a few more weeks of decoration freedom."

"All right then!" She nodded decisively. "Let's go burn stuff in the name of protests....and also hope we don't get arrested or something."

Zoey scoffed a bit. "That's true for you but I spend too much time with Riley. Everyone expects me to cause a stir."
