Firstly, a rant about the turnout. The average turn out appears to be 32%. That is appalling. I don;t understand why people do not vote - it's laziness, no excuse for it and it is shocking. Men and women have died to give people in the UK the right to vote for their representatives, and 68% of the country can;t be bothered to get up off their arse and vote. The elections booths are open well before and after work kicks in, so that's not an excuse either. And considering elections are so rare, there really is no excuse.
It's not clever, it's not a protest, all it shows that the people of the UK are so lazy they don't care about their livelihoods (because it's not just EU elections, it's district and council elections as well. General elections tend to be higher - I should bloody hope so, but we will see next year). SO this is a plea to the people of Great Britain - voting take 5 minutes, DO IT. You're asking for extremism by not voting. Stop being lazy.
EU elections.... Oh wow. Disintegration of Lib Dems, only 1 MEP, (-7) at this stage, I don't think they've got a chance in the general elections next year. They screwed themselves with the student vote, which (I think has gone to Green [currently 3rd place with 1 MEP] and Labour [currently joint 2nd with 24%], over UKIP - could be wrong though). Lib Dems are actually behind the Green party, which is perhaps the most astonishing fact of the night. I wonder if Clegg will be leader for much longer, it's not looking good - and it was already bad after the district elections on Thursday.
Labour are doing badly as an opposition party, as has just been pointed out on the BBC broadcast, which I completely agree with. 1 year away from a general election and Labour have completely failed as an opposition party (the easiest position to hold), they have not established Milliband as a strong candidate, and their policies seem wishy-washy and barely noticeable. Realistically, they should be beating the Conservative's at this point in the game towards the general election.
This is a bad night for the main parties and furthers my opinion, that we will be looking at another hung parliament next year.
P.S. Interesting on a European Level, is the rise in the Euroskeptic parties. I don't know enough about Europe to comment, but I saw Liam Fox (I think - though why he was involved after his balls-up with national security) saying that people want a return to an economic community rather than a political community, and actually, I think that is the right move. As a young person, pulling out of Europe all together may screw me for jobs. Globalization is happening, but we need to figure out a way to surf the tide in a way that works for the UK.
