ZBFC Exclusive Interview With Ed Brubaker (Angel of Death)

Jan 17, 2009 13:18

ZBFC: We are very excited for Zoë and are especially thrilled that she had the opportunity to work with you! Would it be possible to get some information in regard to the film and perhaps a few comments about Ms. Bell?

Brubaker: Happy to answer anything I can about Zoë, of course.

ZBFC: Did you know about Zoë Bell initially, before meeting her?

Brubaker: Sure.  I was a big fan of Xena and Double Dare, and thought she was just about the coolest girl in the whole fucking world (other than my wife, of course).  When my producer, John Norris told me she was interested in doing something like this, I wrote the pitch the next day.

ZBFC: Did you have any role in getting Zoë involved with 'Angel of Death'?
Brubaker: I created the character for her, specifically, and I probably wouldn't have done the project if they hadn't cast her in it, because I couldn't imagine anyone else being able to do it right. But she knocked her screen-test out of the park, and no one else was ever even looked at.

ZBFC: What was your first impression of Zoë upon meeting her?

Brubaker: I love Zoë Bell. She's seriously one of the most cool, fun, and down to earth people I know. She's a crack-up. She and I have the same birthday (although I'm a million years older than her) and we seem to have the same sense of humor.

ZBFC: Did you give her any pointers in regard to the character (Eve)?

Brubaker: Not as much as you'd think. She wrote a document about the character from her POV after reading the script, actually, putting herself into it, really... and it was about 90 percent exactly what I was thinking. Zoë is sharp as hell, and I really think she's going to be a big star. I hope to work with her again soon, honestly. She's NZ's Michelle Yeoh. When people see her in Angel its going to open a lot of eyes, I think. She really inhabits Eve, who is nothing like Zoë is in real life, this dark brooding sarcastic character... I can't wait for people to see her.

ZBFC: Any favorite moments with Zoë (on set or off)?
Brubaker: A lot, but I'm not sure if Zoë wants them repeated, because she has a really dirty mouth. She actually made the stuntmen blush with something she said when we were sitting around on set, even. She's just the best. We all loved her, the whole crew. She's a real person, too. I learned some important stuff from her.

The Zoë Bell Fans Community on Livejournal would like to thank Ed Brubaker for his time and for his quick response to our inquiry.  Very cool, indeed!
