I finally got a reply from friends on Koh Lanta which is in the south part of Thailand that was hit by the tsunami. Luckily they weren't slammed as hard as neighbouring Koh Phi Phi. The email is from Michael & Misha, a couple from Germany that we met last year. They go to Lanta every year to stay at their and our friend's resort and have done so for at least 7 years. Here is their tale
Hi Steph & Andrew,
everyone at BeeBee survived!!! We`ve been catched on the way back from
Saladan on Ans Bike when we saw Thais looking at the beach. We went there to
look why. Then the first wave came and destroyed a bar at the beach. I told
Micha to run ans I tried to push the bike back. The water reached us so
quick!
Micha was saved by a Thai guy in big trouble and I could climb on a palm
tree. The bike was gone and at this place we had two dead people.
BeeBee is nearly complete gone. Restaurant, bar, the bungalows,
kitchen.......Horror. An lost everything in 2 minutes. He looked for
everyone and took care for us. Unbelieveable this guy. We stayed 2 days at
the viewpoint because they warned that there might be more waves. Everybody
was so helpful. Finally we all had so much luck! We arrived tonight back
home and still can not realize about all that.....
Thanks for caring about us!
We wish you the best for 2005!
Micha&Michael
We're going to send our friend An some money. We loved Bee Bee. It was my favourite place in all of Thailand and he's lost everything. We already made a donation to the Red Cross. Guess we'll call today and try and get in touch with him in person, his phone went to machine last time and he may have never got it since it was right after the tsunami hit.
