A man police believe is armed with an assault rifle managed to slip out of a SWAT scene at an Albuquerque elementary school Thursday morning.
According to Albuquerque police, the man is believed to have fled from a car they had stopped near Governor Bent Elementary School in the area of San Pedro and Hendrix.
The incident began about 3:00 Thursday morning when a convenience store at Constitution and Wyoming was robbed by a man carrying what the clerk believed was an assault rifle.
At about 4:15, police pulled over a purple Neon they had been looking for in connection with the robbery. One man was taken into custody, but the armed man fled and police believed he entered the school’s property.
Governor Bent Elementary, which usually begins the school day at 8:50 am, was put on a two-hour delay while police, K-9 units and SWAT team members tried to find the armed man. Nearby Del Norte High School was placed on lockdown. Students were allowed to arrive at the north entrance, but once inside they were not allowed to leave.
Shortly after 8:00, police and the SWAT team cleared the area, but the search continued in the neighborhood just south of San Pedro and Montgomery.
The man who was taken into custody denies an involvement with the fleeing man who is believed to be armed. Police describe the man still on the loose as a white male in his 20s, 5’ 8” tall with sandy blonde hair and wearing dark clothing.
