help themselves....

"The gods help those who help themselves, perhaps. I used to have 3 or 4 interns each summer working under me. They typically were college juniors and seniors and they came to me with widely varying knowledge, skills, aptitudes, and attitudes. The first year I ever had interns I worked most closely with the ones who needed the most help - who had less skills, knowledge, and aptitude. That was a mistake I never repeated again. Why a mistake to help those who most needed it? I found out that those who needed extra help, needed it because they were not diligent in their studies, because they had attitude problems, because they were lazy, because they were unmotivated, in short because they were underachievers by their own choice. And to top it off, they were the least appreciative of the extra help. They liked being underachievers, or more accurately they were comfortable with being underachievers. It was very frustrating for me.

"After that first year I worked most closely with those individuals who were already showing great promise. They were motivated, and appreciative of my guidance." I can't help but wonder if the gods feel the same way. Why would Athena give a hoot about someone who didn't have enough motivation to get anything better than a Burger King job?

I want the gods I worship to challenge me, to motivate me, to inspire me to greatness, not be "enablers" for my weaknesses.

If the best Athena could do is to get me a job at Burger King, I would have to examine myself. What is wrong with me that the best a full-fledged Goddess can do with me is a job flipping burgers? I must be really poor material for Her to work with. Time for some major self-examination and self-improvement.
