Thanks Ruth. I appreciate the statement.
I would be very interested, if they're interested in a conversation, to reading a rebuttal of anything I wrote below by Matt Holzmann or Claude Brodesser-Akner (assuming they are both the "authors" of last week's statement).
The only way anybody can learn is by having conversations with patient and compassionate people of differing perspectives. I enjoy The Business podcast very much (and have for years now) and hope Matt or Claude takes my comments and the comments of others to heart.
Beliefs and actions are different things. And part of being a grown-up person is taking responsibility for them. Raddon's beliefs about gay people are his right. His donation to an amendment taking away my right to get married to my partner of 10 years is also his right.
But it is not his right to do that and simultaneously run a film festival whose mission is explicitly based on inclusion. If he felt that strongly about the different (inferior) status of gay people more than the tolerance of equality his job required him to have, he should have first resigned from FIND and then subsequently donated to Prop 8.
And I'm open to those who find a flaw in that logic.
Best--
