MARVEL
Fantastic Four: Foes trade paperback - This collects the recent mini-series by Robert Kirkman that I passed up because I didn’t know who he was at the time. It’s a fun ride with quality art by Cliff Rathburn, but it’s difficult to place in continuity owing to a major plot point running up against a significant plot point in Civil War. Still, it’s one I know I’ll be reading again.

Fantastic Four Special - Another comic I initially passed up because I didn’t recognize the writer at the time, but when I found out that Dwayne McDuffie, currently writing FF, was the writer then I had to pick it up right away. I’m glad I did. McDuffie, with artist Casey Jones, have crafted a high quality tale concentrating on the relationship between Reed Richards and Victor Von Doom.

Marvel Museum in a Book, by Roy Thomas and Peter Sanderson - With lots of great info dating from 1939 through 2007, consider it a condensed and updated version of Les Daniels’ Marvel: Five Fabulous Decades of the World’s Greatest Comics, but with reproductions of cool pieces of Marvel memorabilia that you can take out. There are sketches from the Golden Age, hand drawn postcards by Bill Everett to his daughter from the 50s, a membership certificate and card from the Merry Marvel Marching Society of the 60s, a convention booklet from the 70s, a Spider-Man and Mary-Jane wedding invitation from the 80s, and a Marvel Mania Hollywood restaurant menu from 90s. But wait there’s more, which I’m not going to list all of. Anyway, I was impressed by the coverage of the “dark ages” between the Golden and Silver ages, something I believe Les skipped over fairly quickly (I could be wrong, it’s been over a decade since I read his book). Anyway, this would make a FANTASTIC gift for a major Marvel maven. I’m just saying, you know, since the holidays are coming up and it’s always so difficult to buy for hardcore geeks.

Sledge Hammer! #1&2 - It’s bizarre. It’s over the top. It perfectly translates Alan Spencer’s TV series into comic form. Issue one sorta features Satana, while issue two kinda features Spider-Man. I laughed… a lot.

Ultimate Spider-Man 100 Project - Featuring art by Sergio Aragones, Mark Bagley, J. Scott Campbell, Frank Cho, Neil Gaiman, Adam Kubert, Andy Kubert, Joseph Michael Linsner, George Perez, Joe Quesada, Frank Quitely, John Romita, Matt Wagner, and more.

Bomb Queen - I picked up the first two trades of Jimmie Robinson’s Bomb Queen, WMD, Woman of Mass Destruction and Dirty Bomb, The Queen of Hearts. I’d describe this series as somewhere between Ennis/Connor’s The Pro and Ellis/Robertson’s Transmetropolitan. The point is less about the unrepentant villain who rules her city with an iron glove, as it is with a society that would accept and thrive under this rule.
