Кюне,
собственной жизни не имея,
инсинуировался в жизни иных,
но и подживаясь так, терзался мыслию о том,
что остаётся здесь прихожим; Лаубе...
Лаубе жил только своею
и никого в неё не впускал.

having no life of his own,
insinuated himself into the lives of others;
yet even in that half-life of his,
a nagging thought tormented him
that here he was but a mere passerby; Laube
Laube lived his l. alone
letting no one in.
