hi! i'm still extant. and i have to get up at four in the morning, so this will have to be quick, since it's almost (gasp) 8:30 now. but here will be a journal of my "everybody should work in a carrot factory" job. my mom worked in a carrot factory once and said that it's good for everyone to have an experience like that. mine is a turn-around at an oil refinery. they shut down the whole "let's take crude oil and make gasoline and jet fuel and things" plant and do all kinds of maintenance and cleaning, then start it up again so we can drive our cars.
i'm on fire watch, confined space watch, whatever they need in terms of a safety person. today i stood outside in five layers of long-sleeved shirts and a down vest and two pairs of pants and big heavy boots and a highly attractive red hard-hat and even more attractive brilliant orange vest with reflective striping. and safety glasses, which are a bit wide for my face so i look even funnier. oh well. they're paying me for it. and i watched the guys welding and grinding and cutting metal pipes and made sure nothing caught on fire. for 11 hours.
it's only for a month and a half or so and i'll make a lot of sweet moolah which i could use. the refinery is near bellingham. i'm looking at moving to bellingham and getting an EMT certification and hopefully getting into a fire department to get some experience.
i never thought i'd go to bed at 8:30 and feel like even that might be pushing it too late. this will be like calvin's camping trips. i should have lots of character built by mid-march.
