Dipping a toe into the sometimes turbulent waters of fandom today in support of female characters in media-driven SF/F. This delightful Uhura picspam image was made by

NASA Shuttle Astronaut Dr. Mae Jemison tweeted the following Trek/Uhura/Nichelle Nichols mini-tributes on September 8, 2011:
1) @maejemison Dr. Mae Jemison
45 years ago, #StarTrek changed the face of space, science, adventure and exploration with its multi-hued co-ed crew.
2) @RealNichelle who played Lt Uhura returned the favor 2 spearhead recruitment of women & people of color for #NASA shuttle program
3) In salute, I started my shifts' ground contacts on the shuttle #Endeavor with "Hailing frequencies open"!
I had the privilege of hearing Dr. Jemison speak at a museum several years ago -- lovely woman, very inspiring & encouraging as she shared her story. She's an MD and a scientist, and her post-spaceflight life includes science consulting and operating her own science & tech R&D/marketing company. She also works with educational & community organizations.
Being a role model is surely a heavy burden at times, but we can all do something to reach out & help others achieve their dreams, no matter our age or experience...I spent a bit of time thinking about how these two women (Nichelle Nichols and Dr. Jemison) personally inspired me, and how I'm making donations of time, $ and information-sharing in the region where I live.
