foodie book

I just wanted to tell you about this awesome book I'm reading. I requested it for Christmas from my dad. It's called Julie & Julia by Julie Powell. If you like French food, cooking, or Julia Child, you will love this memoir. Julie is 29, lives in NYC, is married to her HS sweetheart (very cool relationship they seem to have). She decided to cook every single recipie in Julia Child's classic Mastering the Art of French Cooking (aka MtAoFC) within a year. She kept a blog and then turned it into a memoir. Very fun and easy to read. This is one brave woman! Most of this stuff I wouldn't want to eat, much less prepare. I was intrigued when I heard about it on The Splendid Table (an MPR cooking/food show). Julia is a Smith sister (class of '35, I believe) and my aunt A and I have attempted a few of her recipies ourselves (as long-time readers of my blog may remember). Anyway, it's really fun how she blends discussion of making particular recipies and events in her and her friends' personal lives--the apartment with plumbing from hell, the Republicans she has to work with in her government office, the friend that dumps her marriage to hook up with a punk rocker in England she met over the internet.

Why can't I think of a cash cow project like that?! I really don't think I can make learning all the soprano arias from the Bach cantatas into a best-selling memoir. It's not something many people can relate to and my friends and relatives aren't that crazy.
