back home

The trip was great. I got a lot of stuff done at the house. Everything went either back to MN in my car, found a (semi-) permanent home at my dad's, went to the thrift store, or went in the trash. And I even had time to dust and vacuum. I was sneezing a lot. I got to visit a few friends in SC and eat at some of my favorite unique restaurants. On Friday I drove up to V, stayed in my old house. Met my voice teacher's wife and we drove up to SF together for a concert he was singing in. It was a very nice concert. Three singers (+ my piano teacher), they alternated songs so there was a lot of variety in style of music and performance. One of the singers is a professional opera singer, tenor who sings internationally (his wife is prof at U, therefore his home base is V). After a while I got tired of his opera mannerisms in art song--singing too loud, scooping, and he would actually sharp the pitch before cutting off a long note. But gorgeous voice, of course! Then afterwards there was a reception at some rich alums' home. Very nice people, good snacks. :) Saturday I had lunch with a former colleague and coffee with two friends, then went to my voice teacher's house for dinner. Sunday I had luch with kokopoko in SF on my way back north! And the drive was very uneventful, thank goodness.

One of my SC friends has talked me into selling Mary Kay. There it is! I just told her this AM that I will do it. I think it will be fun. I'll get to know a LOT of people, who will hopefully attend my performances and refer me for wedding gigs, in addition to buying fabulous skin care and make-up products. I will use my quiet sales methods of sincerity, building relationships, and superior customer service to ensure a loyal customer base. My friend is fronting me the money for the starter kit, because that makes her a Team Leader and therefore she gets a higher commission. So I need to find some other friends who will give me small loans to raise the rest of the money I need to actually get started. Hoping for $800 total. It's not a ton of money, and not a big risk for them. If I didn't already have more credit card debt than I'm comfortable with, I'd just charge it myself. But it is good to have other people invested in your success. Anybody need anything? Lipstick, mascara? :) 10% off your first order and free shipping for "Preferred Customers"!

The other good news is that I got a call from the conductor of the Bach Society and he wants me to sing the B Minor Mass with them May 7! The rehearsals conflict with my current teaching schedule for two weeks so I have to get permission from my boss before I can accept. I think she'll be cool about it because she knows how important this is for me. It's a paid gig in a VERY small choir, quite prestigious.

So there it is. I think I can give up the plasma thing. Maybe I'll go a few more times. The cash is still helpful. But definitely less frequently!
