Workin' stiff

Hey, I got a job. So far it's been pretty good, if anomalous.

Week 1: set up computer, registered for benefits, started to get oriented
Week 2: worked like mad on a demo for the keynote at our company's conference
Week 3: Attended said conference in Orlando, along with 7,000 other customers and employees. The keynote demo was pretty smooth.

Got up at 5:30 Eastern time twice in 4 days. Arrived home thursday PM with a totally broken sleep schedule.

Orlando is WEIRD. 100% synthetic, crafted environment, from entire neighborhoods all the way down to the grass. Like being in a theater set, only they charge you for everything. Also, instead of "Sunny Florida" it rained the entire time. It was flooding the day after I left. And at least 75° and humid even early in the morning. Would not buy again.

This is week 4. My manager is awesome, the project that I'm starting is cool, relevant, and challenging. I think I like this work thing.

=========

This past weekend was not the leisurely extended weekend that I was hoping for.

Friends got married at the aquarium sunday night which was cool. I videotaped it. Being part of the crew, I also had/got to attend the saturday rehearsal, the friday night social, and the monday brunch, all of which was good, but it took up most of my social weekend.

I really haven't started training for the STP yet. I've never ridden 100 miles in one day (max was about 60 up to Government Camp from Portland, but that was about 12 years ago), nevermind doing it two days in a row, and the event is in a month an a half away. I'm moderately terrified. To address this, I rode 7 or so hours this weekend over 3 days, one long solo ride, one group ride, one puttering and running errands ride. Not all saddle time, with errands and pit stops and such, but it was about 50 miles. My legs are fine, but I need to get used to that many hours in the saddle. The plan going forward is to ride extended routes home on my commute, so it's more like 10 miles instead of 2. This won't give me extended milage training, but will help condition my tush. Long rides on the weekends should get easier this way too. On the up side, hills that used to challenge me continue to be less daunting. I'm compensating by picking steeper routes and going up them a bit faster. I figure one crazy steep hill is worth at least 5x the same distance or time on a flat.

Saturday night was the 2nd birthday for an astonishingly cute little girl I attended the birth of (not The Cute Redhead's daughter, different 2 y/o). Having that many kids underfoot made me briefly question my own desire to have kid(s).

Sunday brunch with some local family was good too. As was setting up my new (used) Roomba! Robot minions FTW!

No substantive news or progress on the dating front lately; been too busy with work. Hopefully that will change in the next week or so.

Now, sleep, 2+ hours overdue...

wedding, busy, stp, birthday, job
