It interests me from a feminist perspective how the Catholic church-- or at least you, as a Catholic-- ascribes judgment to Christ yet infinite benevolence-- and deific status-- to Mary, when there's nothing Scriptural to support the latter at all, even in the so-called New Testament. The Virgin Cult is pretty fascinating from a historical perspective.

Mass psychic manifestations fueled by collective faith? Other supernatural forces working through the statues, including but not limited to either G-d or possible malevolent spirits? Pre-Christian magic co-opted and adopted by the faith, like in the Santeria tradition? Mutants with strong religious bents or upbringings unconsciously using psychokinetic powers to create stigmata?
