CHARACTER NAME: Akihiko Sanada
SERIES: Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 FES
RESERVED: Yes
WISHLIST: Yes
PERSONALITY: Akihiko's personality is greatly linked to the death of his sister. The orphanage he lived in as a child caught fire, trapping his younger sister inside. The adults at the orphanage kept Akihiko from returning to the fire to try to save his sister, if only to save Akihiko from harm, Akihiko saw it as a failure within himself. He often says this made him weak and that he was helpless to save those he cared about, which triggered an unshakeable drive in him. For an 18 year old he is extremely mature (though not above letting go for a while to have fun) and something of a father figure to the underclassmen in S.E.E.S. His concern extends to all of the members of the group and does not really play favorites (except perhaps with Shinjiro).
Though despite his maturity and level headedness, he is an extremely emotional individual. His friendships are very important to him, and has a very deep seated sense of right and wrong, almost to the point of being pig headed about it. While he is not about to force others to see his way of thinking, he will not sway from it himself. When confronted with the impossible odds of fighting Nyx at the end of the game, he is the only one that does not seem shaken or discouraged as he knows it is what must be done. His cool composure can break almost instantly when he is confronted with situations he feels strongly about, when S.E.E.S. is sent to fight Strega, the group that killed his childhood friend Shinjiro, his cool, almost professional composure is completely absent, as he expresses the wish to kill Strega for what they had done to Shinjiro.
A case could be made for the nobility of character in Akihiko, however despite his exceptional personality traits he is still an average 18 year old, fumbling with girls and concerned about his appearance. Shigenori Soejima (the designer of the game) says Akihiko spends a good deal of time on what he wears and how he presents himself.
Akihiko represents the Emperor Arcana in the main character's personal compendium of social links (each one represents one of the major arcana in the the traditional tarot deck), words that are often associated with the Emperor, according to Wikipeida, are; "fathering, stability, authority, power, common sense, egocentrism, leadership, experience, and inflexibility". These are all extremely relevant to Akihiko's personality.
TIMELINE: Post The Journey pre The Answer
BACKGROUND: Akihiko Sanada was orphaned at a young age with his younger sister Miki. The circumstances of this are unknown, but it would appear his oldest memories are of the orphanage, and not of his parents. It is in this orphange he meets and befriends Shinjiro Aragaki. The orphanage they were raised in was destroyed in a fire, taking his sister's life. Little else is said of Akihiko's childhood, though it would seem it was an average one with the exception of its tragic culmination of events. The death of Akihiko's sister left him feeling useless and unable to save the things that were important to him.
There is an absence of information on what happens between his sisters death and his high school years, but upon entering high school and befriending Mitsuru Kirijo; he, Mitsuru and Shinjiro join S.E.E.S., which stands for Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad. Their purpose was to eliminate shadows during the Dark Hour, which, at the time were seen as a threat. The Dark Hour is essentially the 25th hour of the day unknown to the average person at occurs at midnight in which non persona users are transmogrified into coffins for a span of time. Only persona users are aware of this time. During this time Gekkoukan High School turns into an abstract structure known as Tartarus, which seems to be the source of the shadows in the real world - upon each full moon a strong shadow appears, which S.E.E.S. feels is their duty to destroy. They fight the shadows with a manifestation of their psyche known as Personas. Akihiko represents the Emperor Arcana by means of his Persona, Polydeuces - a bulky Persona, that deals damage through both physical attacks and electric ones. Polydeuces represents the mythological figure Pollux, brother of Castor (which is the name of Shinjiro's Persona), his friendship with Shinjiro mirrors the story of Castor and Pollux until the very end.
However after Shinjiro lost control of his persona (something Akihiko had initially expressed concern about) and killed an innocent bystander S.E.E.S. was somewhat disbanded. While they were functional, they were only left with Mitsuru and Akihiko. In addition to his participation in the activities of S.E.E.S. Akihiko is the boxing champion of the school. When not fighting shadows, Akihiko is most certainly training. After the incident, his relationship with Shinjiro becomes strained due to Shinjiro's reluctance to interact with the members of S.E.E.S.
At the start of Persona 3 FES the main character is not introduced to Akihiko, he is often spoken of as someone to admire and look up to, he is also spoken of a powerful persona user, however he is out of comission due to having been injured during the Dark Hour. The silent main character of Shin Megami Tensei; Persona 3, known cannonly as "Arisato Minato"'s ability to control Persona's seem to impress Akihiko, as unlike the rest of S.E.E.S. "Minato" is able to control more than one persona and switch between them at will. Upon leaning this Akihiko willingly hands leadership of the 4 person team that is sent into Tartarus to fight the shadows.
Each full moon shadows come, particularly strong shadows unlike the ones that are found in the hive of Tartarus. S.E.E.S. connects the coming of the larger shadow to the spreading of something called Apathy Syndrome, a crippling state that causes its victims to collapse, no longer able to care for themselves. The numbers of those inflicted with Apathy Syndrome increase with the approach of the full moon and suddenly drop after the defeat of the shadow.
As the year progresses more Persona uses are discovered, including, Takeba Yukari, Iori Junpei, Aegis (a robot made to specifically combat shadows), Koromoru (a Shiba Inu also with the ability to summon a Persona) Yamagishi Fuuka, and Amada Ken.
The circumstances surrounding Fuuka's joining S.E.E.S. struck a chord with Akihiko. Fuuka had gone missing from school, and it was something of a talking point amongst the students. S.E.E.S. manages to track her down inside Tartarus during the Dark Hour, but when the stakes become dangerous, Yukari suggests they just leave Fuuka inside Tartarus. Akihiko is clearly reminded of his sister and his inability to save her, and insists they continue on to find Fuuka.
Ken's presence in the S.E.E.S. dorm seems to be a source of concern for Akihiko, partially because Ken is considerably younger than the rest of the members of S.E.E.S. and he fears he is being forced into the position simply because of his ability to use a Persona, and partially because the woman Shinjiro killed two years ago was Ken's mother and Ken's true intentions concerned Akihiko.
Shortly after Ken's joining S.E.E.S. Shinjiro returns to the group due to pressure from Akihiko. However during this time Shinjiro had been taking drugs meant to suppress his persona - supplied by the artificial persona users known as Strega, which, while effective, also guarantee Shinjiro's life is shortened. While his friendship with Shinjiro was certainly strained during his absence, his concern is still present, asking repeatedly about Shinjiro's suppressant use, though not getting any answers from his friend. Upon realizing that Ken only joined S.E.E.S. in order to exact his revenge on Shinjiro, Akihiko takes it upon himself to save the two of them, if not from each other, then from their own demons. However it is unclear exactly how Akihiko plans to do this.
Ken and Shinjiro meet in private in order to negotiate their situtation, but are interrupted by the leader of Strega, Takaya Sakaki, who opens fire on Shinjiro. When Ken does not finish the job, Takaya fires at Ken. Shinjiro puts himself in front of Ken, taking the bullet meant for him, which kills him. Upon learning of Shinjiro's selflessness, his persona to transform into Ceasar. Akihiko states he is no longer afraid to die, inspired by his friend's sacrifice. At this point Akihiko takes more of a big brother role to Ken, as Ken has looked up to Akihiko throughout his stay at the S.E.E.S. dorm.
This is where Shinjiro and Akihiko's relationship mirrors that of Castor and Pollux - Castor is mortal, while Pollux is immortal, and upon learning of Castor's death Pollux asks his immortal father to let Pollux share his immortality (this making Pollux mortal) with his brother in order to keep them together. While Shinjiro's life could not be saved, his death triggered a significant change in Akihiko. His sense of right and wrong is strongly founded, and his actions seem to be based in trying to avenge Shinjiro's sacrifice (one of his most frequent fatality phrases is; "Did you see that Shinji?").
It is revealed months after Shinjiro's death that the noble intentions of S.E.E.S., have been misguided, by killing the Shadows on the full moon they have made the shadows stronger. The adult that oversees the S.E.E.S. dorm, Shuji Ikutsuki, had been telling them they needed to defeat these major shadows in order to end the Dark Hour, when in reality by defeating these shadows they are bringing them together to summon Nyx to Earth and to bring around the end of the world. While Akihiko is usually unflappable, this takes all of S.E.E.S. by surprise, as they have not ended the dark hour and the shadows are still harming those not aware of the dark hour, but by defeating shadows they are bringing about their demise.
Shortly after this however, the S.E.E.S. members are introduced to a transfer student named Mochizuki Ryoji. He is extremely charming and seems very interested in the members of S.E.E.S., "Minato" specifically. Aegis insists, quite frequently, that Ryoji is dangerous despite having no real justification as to why she thinks this. The coming of Nyx is known even to those without the use of a persona, a cult has formed that says if one believes in Nyx, then they shall be saved from the fall. This cult is lead by Takaya, the leader of Strega. Though it is later revealed that Ryoji is the bringer of Nyx, he is the human manifestation of Death. He asserts that Nyx is impossible to defeat, and that their only alternative would be to kill him - which would erase the dark hour and their memories of it, allowing them to live the rest of their life being unaware of their impending death. The player is given a choice to kill Ryoji or to allow him to live, if he is allowed to live he brings about the arrival of Nyx and the members of S.E.E.S. remain aware of their fate. Akihiko seems to be the least afraid of what awaits them, saying that even if they are to die, he doesn't want all of their work to be futile, for Shinjiro to have died in vein.
Nyx is defeated by the main character, who sacrifices his life to seal away the force, the remaining members of S.E.E.S. live, however all their memories of the dark hour and their experiences therein are forgotten. Until 3 months later at Akihiko's graduation, quite suddenly the members of S.E.E.S. remembered they were going to meet at the tree on the school grounds. Here "Minato" dies, and with his death the memories of the Journey return to the members of S.E.E.S.
ABILITIES: Akihiko has the ability to summon a Persona with the aid of an Evoker. A persona is a manifestation of its summoner's personality, Akihiko's first Persona (as well as its optimized form) attacks mainly through physical attacks - reflecting Akihiko's aptitude for boxing and hand to hand combat, as well as the skill Zio, which is the power of electricity. Which shows an intenseness and volatile nature that he harbors. In addition to this he also has the power to heal using Dia, reflecting his caring nature. He is something of a father figure to the underclassmen on the S.E.E.S. team, and is seen as a confident and someone who will keep one's best interests at heart.
The evoker is a gun shaped device meant to summon the persona from the users psyche. The similarities to a gun, it has been alluded to, is meant to bring about the surge of emotion that would be needed to actually shoot ones self in the head, and instead summoning the persona. Though Akihiko says Mitsuru, the founder of S.E.E.S., shaped the evoker like a gun simply to catch Akihiko's attention, allowing him to think that he would be shooting Shadows, not himself.

EDENSPHERE NAME: Pollux
BIRTHDAY LOG: "Think of the Giant squirrels. They think of you naked." I'll pass, thanks though!
DREAM: The floor was moving. It had separated from the rest of the building, nothing held anything up there was no support, no structure, no anything. He was standing on something, but it could hardly be considered the floor. His surroundings were swimming around him, as though slowed in water, though his own body seemed unaffected, though his vision seemed to have gone green. He could see his hand reaching forward towards nothing, grasping at something that wasn't there.
There was fire. There was fire and he was straining towards it. He needed to return to it. There was something there he needed to go back to. Something the fire was going to take from him. His head turned, there was a shadow - it was the best he could describe it, cold dirty hands wrapped around his wrist pulling him back.
"Let me go. I need to go back. Let me go back. She's still-"
His cries were unheard, all that he was given in return was the cold wringing hands around his wrist, pulling back to the green floor. His face is pressed into the floor, its cold and in the edges of his vision he can see blackness swirling up around him, coils of black smoke reaching towards him, brushing against him as though curious about his form. A tendril pauses, just clear enough in his peripheral vision, coiling back on itself before snapping forward, engulfing his vision entirely.
It was a street. Not one he was inherently familiar with, but one that took a form, unlike the green room. He could hear his own voice, but he was unaware he was speaking, as though experiencing something through himself, without being himself.
"No. Don't do it."
The Hierophant simply stares at him, raising the gun to his head.
There was too much sound, a bang, the sound of a body falling, the scream of a woman, his own shouts. Green.
The room is green again. There's a gun in his own hand and the blackness has taken form. The darkness spanning outward in terrible black wings a mask-like face leering down at him, its soft chuckles echoing in the swimming air.
It seemed natural, it seemed right. Just as he had seen the Hierophant he raised the gun to his head, his finger shaky at the trigger. A word was on his lips, it was a word he didn't know he knew, but it was an important one. He swallowed hard, his finger becoming sure against the trigger
"Poly-" and the rest was obscured by the bang.
JOURNAL SAMPLE: Alright. I think maybe I've wrapped my mind around all this now. It feels kind of stupid to tell this to a book. Its just like starting over. Except with out all the baggage. I guess that's alright. I mean, it could be worse, I guess I could remember what I'm missing.
Guess it doesn't help that I wish I could remember what I'm missing.
Nothing to do about it then. Just have to make the most of it at this point.
ASPIRATIONS: Akihiko is a pretty upright guy, he'll want to get a job, make friends. He doesn't have very large aspirations as he's the average well-to-do 18 year old.
