It's been a pretty great day... Woke up early, had some tofu miso stew and whole wheat bread (both made by Steph and me), cleaned Julia's apartment for an hour. Then went to an awesome talk by a guy who ran away to Costa Rica in the 60's and has been trying to protect red macaws and sloths and improve conservation practices there ever since. I very much enjoyed his perspective that science, socioeconomics, and spirituality are all connected. This is for my brilliant multidisciplinary class on Costa Rica, by the way. This weekend we heard talks on the free trade controversy, feminist literature, and conservation biology and have to write a paper about all three. Rock.
After the talk, Steph and I went on a waffle date. Then we came home and cuddled the kitty a bit and I read awesome essays by Denise Levertov and took a nap. Then Julia drove us to Target so we could get stuff for our bellydance costumes: big dangly earrings (success!) and dramatic makeup (not so much... cheap makeup sucks). Then we came home and Taylor served a delicious Indonesian noodle/nut dish. Then B called and apparently had an excellent day at work, which makes me happy. Her bosses gave her a gift certificate for being such a good employee, and they are letting her take at least a week off around my graduation!
Then it was time for My Last Contra Dance at Carleton. Aww, I'm all sentimental today. Ha, I can't believe I'm missing Minnesota already, especially when it's been cold, windy, and on-and-off snowy all day. I must be crazy. Anyway, the dance was a great time. I danced with many friendly people and never lacked for a partner. I got to dance and chat with my townie bellydance classmates Lori and Beth. And, to make up for the last contra dance where I felt hounded by sketchy men, a very gentlemanly older gentleman asked to dance with me for the last dance. He paid me just the right amount of attention, and like most older gents, he was a great lead. Yay. And the music was wonderful as always. It made me think how much I'm going to miss Carleton and Northfield. People here get so happy about simple community get-togethers like a contra dance, and they all pitch in to make it happen. That's one thing I'll definitely miss about small-town life.
But the good news is, there's much more awesome dance stuff on the horizon. Although our Earth Day bellydance gig was sadly canceled (due to the lack of other acts), we have two informal shows for beginning classes coming up. AND we get to go to a hafla (no idea if I spelled that right) in June, right after classes get out, which will be out of town and I think will involve meeting people who are far better than we are and getting to watch them dance, as well as dancing ourselves. I am super excited. Also also, in Corvallis there is apparently a fantastic and welcoming bellydance group which performs weekly at a local deli, has a library of instructional videos as well as many classes, etc.
Ooh, we were gonna make bagels. Better get those started. Britta and Ainsley are going to help us make brunch tomorrow to learn the ropes. What can I say? Those two have totally charmed me.
