Note to the world: My best friend leaves for her sophomore year of college on Saturday. I'm sorry for not being around, but I'm with her.
I was awakened this morning by a huge crash of thunder. For much of the afternoon, the air was solid rain, and after awhile, the hard Arizona ground couldn't soak it up anymore and everything flooded. It was exciting. After things calmed down, I put on some of my new fuzzy socks and made chocolate chip cookies.
In between everything, I finished Till We Have Faces. I love C.S. Lewis. I especially love how he managed to tell a story set in ancient times (not actually in Ancient Greece but a fictitious kingdom near it) and still make it a Christian story. According to him, the virtuous heathens were saved. I mean, just look at this passage (in which Psyche describes how she prepared to be sacrificed on a mountain):
"The only thing that did me good... was quite different. It was hardly a thought, and very hard to put into words. There was a lot of the Fox's philosophy in it - things he said about gods or 'the divine nature' - but mixed up with things the Priest said, too, about the blood and the earth and how sacrifice makes the crops grow... It seemed to come from somewhere deep inside me... deeper than fears and tears. It was shapeless, but you could just hold onto it, or just let it hold onto you."
Also, I was delighted at this: "I wonder if the gods know what it's like to be human."
I think I need some more chocolate and best friend time. Otherwise I'm going to explode at the next person who thinks they know everything. I hate being chronically bitchy.
