1. I get a degree in philosophy, go to graduate school, and become a professor. My students love me, and I am richer than I ever thought I would be, but I still feel like I should be doing something more constructive.
2. I get an idea for a novel in college. I work on it every spare minute, asking Kay and Becky for lots of help, and find someone to publish it. It doesn't make much money, but it gets great reviews. I feel like a real writer for the rest of my life, I write many more things, and I don't mind my day job.
3. I transfer to Reed and convince Buzzy to move to Portland with me. We share an apartment, work hard, and study hard. We enjoy ourselves most of the time, but we both find it hard living on our own. We eventually have a big fight; she moves back to Corvallis and hates me passionately for awhile. We become friends again years later. I stay in Oregon and make decent money working for a nonprofit organization.
4. Catherine and I get an apartment together. We eventually marry each other just for convenience. We make in-jokes and pamper our cats for the rest of our lives.
5. I meet the guy of my dreams at Carleton. We keep each other warm for three winters straight. We move to Minneapolis, buy a house and fill it with books, and raise two kids.
6. I join the Peace Corps after college and spend my life teaching people in rural South America how to read.
7. I become a librarian in a small town. I turn lots of little kids on to Ramona Quimby and Pippi Longstocking. I never lose my reputation for being shy and odd, but I don't care. I live alone in a house that's an incredible fire hazard.
8. I go to China, join a Buddhist monastery, and emerge without my desires. I grow old helping other people become as crazy and happy as I am.
9. I move back to Arizona after college and devote myself to trying to improve the public schools. I become an eccentric local public figure, and I feel satisfied because I am fighting the good fight.
