Finished going through the entirety of How to Read 13 yesterday...I loved it; information-overload opportunities are always going to be something I'll jump on the chance to geek out over, but...there were some things I greatly disliked about that book.

All the chances they had to give backstory on...characters, and Wammy House...and then not going deeper on that, but just fixating on the same already-available information, or only revealing things like, "Well, if Character A had been drawn more strikingly, they would have been in the story more." That quote? Used so much. It was maddening, there were so many times in the interviews where it seemed the writer and artist were both just condescendingly pulling facts out of their asses. It's like, "I paid money for this?"

It's frustrating because Another Note, having been released at the same time as HtR13, is even more confusing to discern what could be considered canon and what should be considered as extraneous information. HtR13 never brings up A, barely brings up B except when referencing the events that take place in AN, and then overall AN gives so much information and HtR13 not going into it...and possibly negating it...

I wanted to know more about how Wammy House functioned. (I can't call it Wammy's House. I kept reading it that way in AN and for some reason, the two s thing throws me off. It's very bizarre.) Though, if AN is to be taken as canon, I was correct on my theory of the security there...though that would have been common sense that anyone should have picked up, had they thought on it for moment or two. And I wanted to know who A was--are we even told A's gender, anywhere in the story/books/guides/interviews?

Then I think there were translation errors, but that two possibly negates things. I just remember things from people translating, then the official translation...was off from what the fan translations said, which also made more sense than the official translation...

And all the catty little comments on Mello, in HtR13? So not cool. Not only is the opportunity to elaborate on him almost entirely wasted, what little is given to him is mostly just biased bs. Definitely another moment of "I paid money for this?" Even worse, there's now all this trash floating around from the fanthings who think HtR13 totally retcons the DN second arc and Mello, instead of being second-in-line-to-successor-of-L is now actually an idiot who's violent and rage-y and only those three things.

And Near possesses no emotions at all.

And DeviantArt is now overwhelmed by DN Sues. I'd been watching Slinker's comic strips, and every few days, or once a week, I'd do a search through the new stuff to see if there was anything good coming in from anyone else...last week, I did my usual search, and every four out of five submissions were either an OC meant for Wammy House or a L or Light girlfriend Sue. THEY WERE ALL SUES. /headdesk

Kris wanted to see my books and was impressed with them. She and Nate are getting Netflix and were planning on getting DN episodes and I'm getting impatient over it--I have no one to discuss the series with, even on the LJ comms, it all erupts into fights on interpretations/misinterpretations...

speculation, mello pwnz your soul, fanthings, fandom, wammy's house, tl;dr, death note
