Notes from Newport #1: In Which YouTube and Dancing '80s German Vampires Rock my World

Aug 06, 2007 13:59

Made it to Boston at 08h30 yesterday morning, after completely re-packing sometime in the wee small hours (neequdrazil, the more-or-less completed sewing made another bag imperative, so things got redistributed.)

I think the repacking was a terrible idea, because when I claimed my bags at Logan, the front pocket of the backpack was hanging open, and all that remained inside it was the wrapper from some long-ago-consumed chocolate. Of the cosmetics case (including contact lenses), beads I was sewing on my dress, and soft-soled dance shoes that had been in that pocket, there was no sign.

Sigh. Fortunately I have two other pairs of dance shoes with me. Fortunately, the gown for which I had purchased the beads has enough work done that it won't look incomplete. But I have no contacts.

On the positive side, one of the young ladies here introduced me to Tanz der Vampire. It may well be one of the most amazing works of theatre ever, as this tender lovesong (I think) demonstrates:

Cheezy '80s pop music! Goff vampires (but of course! What other kinds are there?)! '70s and '80s musical-theatre-style choreography! And it's in GERMAN, which lends it a peculiar earnestness.

Yes, this is the work for which Total Eclipse of the Heart was originally written. As the grand finale:

So I had to look it up, of course. Jim Steinman, wrote the score, the lyrics, and the book. He also composed a bunch of songs, including Bat out of Hell for MeatLoaf. The score was, of course, based on the film by Roman Polanski, who may have staged the Vienna production of the musical.

The awesome just doesn't stop. So of course, I had to share it with you.

sharing the wealth, wtf, travel, ganked from the interwebs, transdimensional transmogrification, squee, silliness, comings and goings, teh crack, guilty pleasures
