human_loser skools me in writing letters to politicians:

To: Stephen Harper
,
Jack Layton ,
Stephane Dion ,
Gilles Duceppe

Subject: Dudes! Have we prorogued equal rights now, too? Not cool!

To: My homies Steve, Jack, Steph and G-Deuce

Hey, guys!

Now, I know that nothing will get done about this for a couple of months (thanks, Steve! You're a real patriot, working for us all!), but I want to register my concern about our pal Jim's whole trying-to-roll-back-equal-rights-in-the-workplace thing. You're busy, dudes, so I'll keep it short: it's a bit disgusting. Right? I mean to actually publicly and officially, in the 21st Century, put forth the notion that we've solved the whole sexism thing, and in fact the legislation that we put in place to combat it is now somehow a problem because it's redundant, I guess? Maybe I've got that wrong, I'm not really sure what/if Ol' Jim was thinking, or in what historical period he imagined himself when he was doing said alleged thinking. I just know that to my ears and, I'd wager, to the ears of most Canadian voters, that it all sounds pretty cavalierly and consciously evil. Just sayin.

You rock my world. I totally need to write more letters to my homies on the Hill.

audrawilliams Both reminds us of things we need to remember, and helps to change the way we talk about things:

We hold the events at arm’s length, and we squint.

In looking for answers, we ask ourselves: “why?”.

Because we can take comfort in that answer to “why?”

It contains phrases that allow us some distance:

“Lone gunman.”

“Isolated incident.”

“Psychotic break.”

Oh, we let ourselves think. That’s why. All of those reasons are separate from me. Unique.

I am not culpable.

I am not in danger.

But the question we don’t let ourselves ask is "what?".

My friends are smrt.
