The next time someone posts something to LJ or Facebook, or e-mails you something, and it's a thing that you thought was awesome when you first saw it, six months, or a year, or two years ago, rather than saying something like "Oh, yeah, that. I thought it was funny when I first saw it. It's old now,"* consider the following:
1) You too thought that the meme was funny/smart/apt/interesting, when you first saw it.
2) The person who sent it to you thought of you, and in sharing this bit of net-awesome with you has behaved in a thoughtful, friendly, if not entirely au-courant, way.
3) If you were not more au-courant than your friend, you too would be chortling.
And perhaps you may choose to respond in a manner more like this:
"Oh, hey! Thanks for thinking of me! That [[comic/blog post/LOLcat/YouTube video/whatever]] never stops being funny, does it?"
Or even (in the case of a blog post not directed at you, personally):
"Oh hey! I hadn't thought of that in ages. Still makes me smile. Have you seen ... [[relevant netwonder of the moment]]?"
And perhaps reciprocating the gesture by sharing one of your more au-courant links (thereby both thanking your friend/acquaintance, and helping that person to become more au-courant).
You don't lose cool points by being kind.
