As part of my efforts to stay within my monthly budget, I check the daily deals offered by websites such as Groupon, LivingSocial, and Woot. Sometimes they'll have a deal for a fun activity, and this time it was for a painting with glass on ceramics class at
Fat Cats Ceramics in Brandon, MS.
With the deal I paid $9 for an $18 class. I got to pick out two ceramic pieces from a small selection of Christmas ornaments and leaves. I picked out a bell and a large leaf. Then I got to choose six colors to paint the ceramics. How this class worked is that you paint the ceramic and then you place pieces of glass on it. Painting the ceramics served to fill in glassless spots with some color. The ceramic is heated and the glass melts and colors the ceramic. If you size your pieces correctly, the glass stays within the ridges on the ceramic and it appears colored in. The leaves were simpler though. When the glass melted on them, gravity pulled it to the middle of the leaf (because they were bowl shaped).
I really liked how both my pieces came out. The shop owner said that you shouldn't mix the paint colors because they can change after the pieces are fired. Unfortunately I forgot and tried to fade the colors together on my leaf. Luckily they came out how I hoped they would.
