* Have discovered digital comics. Why did I not discover digital comics before? Now hush, I have plenty of Marvel goodness to catch up on. Oh, Tony Stark, how many different ways do you have to break my heart?

* Signed up for holmes_big_bang. 20k, deadline June 28. Should be doable. I just have to learn everything about the Victorian world. Oh, and find a plot ( Read more... )

Oooooooohhh! This sounds like it will be juicy & lovely! (I'm looking forward to the fic too. ;-)

FWIW, I've had conversations with lisas_secret, who's very knowledgeable about British history & Holmesania (Holmesism? Sherlockania? whatever) about the movie. We both agree that there's enough ambiguity about Watson in canon, & enough bipolar range in Holmes' character, to cover many many different takes on them & their relationship. The really difficult thing about writing a Holmes fic today is staying true to the period while coming up with crimes & action that don't seem hopelessly dated & quaint. Too many stories either end up with jarring anachronisms (like the movie's gadgets & explosions, or inventions that only Mycroft knows about) or a Holmes who invents scientific methods or machines decades ahead of the rest of society.

The only things I can imagine working are either the "timeless crimes" (blackmail, love tangle, family friction leading to murder & so on), or something involving the unthinking brutalities of the day which would satisfy the modern reader's love of violence without requiring a high body count or explosions. (But then I'm not an author, just an anal-compulsive reader & movie-watcher--which is part of why I so rarely watch movies any more. ;-)

Have fun researching, dearie! If you need any help or suggestions, srsly, lisas_secret majored in history, knows heaps about British history specifically, & is a librarian. I'd be happy to pass on a request if you like.

Research is fun. A little too fun sometimes! I'm reading everything I can find about the period and hopefully I'll manage to avoid too much fail. (I'm kinda worried that I'll screw something up and the fandom police will strike down on me with displeasure...)

You're completely right about the timeless crimes, and I think I'm going to use something fairly uncomplicated for the story. Whatever case I find for Holmes will just serve as a backdrop for the real plot of how Holmes and Watson handle the changes to their relationship, not to mention how Mary handles it.

I will be grateful for all the help I can get and I'm sure I'll need proofreaders when I'm finished writing!

Feel free to e-mail me at gmail with anything you have questions about or would like a pair of eyes on. I'm not on-line every day but I'll be very pleased to help as soon as I see it! (And at least as far as the sherlockkink comm is concerned, the SH fandom police seem as tolerant as SGA ones. ;-)
