I LOVE Devil's Rejects. I think it's the all time high mark in the genre. Part of what makes it so great is that I believe Rob Zombie is really fascinated by our relationship to our own violent impulses - the uneasy, interrelated nature of the thrill of confidence, power and control - the giddy high of the freedom that accompanies th full exercise of free will -- and the repulsion at the violation of the standards that define how we understand the world. In DJ, we vascilate between identifying with the killers because we share their same disdain for their victims weakness and gulibility, and horror at the result of their madness ( ... )

CGI knife and under-used mary woronov aside, i enjoyed 'devil's rejects' quite a bit. for me, it's a showpiece demonstrating zombie's love for cult/exploitation cinema both in its casting and in its style. his use of music is always incredible, the look of the film is nice and gritty, and the title sequence (with allman brothers' "midnight rider") makes the hair on my arms stand up. good times. this is clearly a movie made by someone who respects a bygone era of film for the right reasons and is doing more than just liberally borrowing (see "planet terror") but rather filtering it through a very creative and reverential mind. in simpler terms: blood AND boobies ( ... )
