I watched Equilibrium tonight. I heard it was a decent action flick that had very poor distribution and is not known to exist by many.
Thank tha loooooooord for the internet! If you don't want any spoilers, be careful. There are some below.
The movie had a couple of eye-rollingly entertaining action scenes but other than that it was flawed beyond belief.
In the future, there's been a third world war. The survivors know they cannot have another war.. heh. Okay so the world's population have finally figured out that it's really not in a very good state now. It's NOW time to do something about it.
Some brilliant person came to the conclusion that rage and war were symptoms.. of a disease known as human emotion.
So the only way to achieve peace is to suppress human emotion. Now the world (we can only presume the whole world is in on this, since the movie only takes place in one city and never refers to the world around it - typical american production) is a stagnant place where conformity rules, the population takes a drug to suppress their emotions and anything that could lead to an emotional response or that was a product of someone expressing themselves, is destroyed.
You see, there's an underground resistance that doesn't really resist. They just hide around the city like hobos, hiding large caches of old world relics.. paintings, records, old furniture, etc. Even a fancy frame on a mirror is illegal. It's funny that nothing before the 80s seemed to survive or be cherished.. only crap you'd see on the antique roadshow.
The population all wears the same clothes and gets brainwashed daily by 'the father' - the man who instated all of this nonsense.
It makes perfect sense why they wouldn't acknowledge the rest of the world. As if everyone is really going to agree to this way of life.
Give me a break. This movie pissed me off. To its credit, the protagonists did expose a lot of this shit in the movie and saw that life was worth living with emotions and feeling. But I found it hard to believe that the world (or the majority) could ever get to the state it was in.
The huge flaw is that 'feeling' and 'emotions' seem to be selective in the movie. You don't need to break down and cry or burst out laughing to be feeling emotions. So people in the movie are constantly angry, amused, etc.. yet supposedly have no emotions. It's bull shit.
I think that as long as you're a sentient being and are aware of your own existence, you experience emotions and can be ruled by them.
It would have been better if the people just became more disciplined and learned to control themselves like vulcans. They could have been a society of peaceful monks or something. But instead, they use a stupid drug.
As corny as it sounds.. the movie does 'make you think' as I have found. Sure, I'll give them that.. human emotion is responsible for destruction and chaos.
But you need balance.. so the bad shit is required. That is why I don't think war on earth should be stopped. The end. :)
The movie kind of feels like a video game with an attempt at a plot. I think it would work well for a game.
Jesus, the movie doesn't even show anybody with jobs.. or doing anything other than being brainwashed or hunting down offenders.
They couldn't risk showing anyone living a normal life.. this dumb world wouldn't work if people had jobs.
They would expose the sham if they showed a guy at work.. what would the work be?
You see kids at school, I think.. but what are they learning? How the fuck do they expect us to believe that these people are living without emotion.
I mean, that's obviously the point.. that there IS no point to living that way. It just doesn't make sense and it's beleiveable at all.. fuckers.
What a shitty story. They took the eay way out, every step of the way. Oh and when they find some underground people with a supply of puppies, one of the cops seriously has no idea why these people would be keeping puppies.. to eat?! (he actually suggests that) Just because he doesn't feel emotions doesn't mean he has to be such a dumb fuck and not understand basic things. The only thing these people are taught is that horrible things happened in the past and this is the only way to live in peace. Without emotion, how can they ever understand why all that horror was even bad? They SHOULD be mindless zombies walking around and chanting but the population is relatively normal.. people have different personalities, etc. What a pile of shit.
I've barely seen any negative feedback on this movie. Everyone is rating it so highly and begging for it on DVD.. because they like some kind of 'new' fighting style where they slap each other around with guns. If that's all the movie was about, then fine.. but it was trying so hard to be much more.
I think I should make a public site about how much this movie sucked ass.. it would bring balance to the world.
