Adam woke up to a searing pain in his head, a dry mouth and Tommy shaking his shoulder. “Adam,” he said, and it both sounded too loud and too far away. “Adam, we have to work today. Come on, drink some water. It’ll help.” Adam opened his eyes just as Tommy held a glass out. Adam pulled himself up, muscles protesting, and gulped it down. Tommy was standing in front of him, looking concerned but also a little impatient.
“We were at the party…” He didn’t know how he was supposed to finish that sentence. Tommy pulled the glass away and tried to help him sit the rest of the way up, undoing the zipper on the pants he still had on. “I don’t…how did we get here?”
“I drove,” Tommy said. “But baby, we don’t have much time. I have coffee and if you can eat, Dave can fix you something but we have to go soon. Can you take a shower? Do you need me to go in with you?” Adam tried to stand up and it was like an explosion going off in the back of his head. “Adam…”
“I can get up,” Adam whispered, even as he felt his stomach roil against the water he just drank. “I…come with me.” Tommy walked him to the bathroom, a hand on his side to steady him, and they both got into the shower. Tommy helped keep him upright, and Adam laced their hands together as Tommy tried to get him clean. Adam got out and got a quick towel off before he stumbled back to Tommy’s room where last night’s clothes were. “Do I have anything else?” Tommy came back with a cup of coffee.
“I don’t think so-most of your clothes aren’t here. Hey Dave,” Tommy said a little too loud. Adam could hear Dave in the kitchen. “Can you drive us to the bus station?” Adam walked slowly into the kitchen and sat down with his coffee, just sipping it. Dave nodded at them while standing over a pan of bacon and eggs. The smell of that didn’t do anything for Adam’s stomach either, but he was distracted.
“We’re taking the bus?” Tommy sipped his own coffee and nodded. “Why?” Adam had never taken the bus, because he’d always had a car. He wasn’t sure he could even bring water on the bus.
“It’s a long way, and you can’t drive like this and I don’t want to drive your car that far. I’m tired too, you know. I bet you haven’t taken the Disney Express too often. It’s not so bad. I’ll bring some water and you can bring the coffee too if you want.” Adam must have looked confused, so Tommy put on a patient expression. “We have to work. I know you got trashed, but I can’t let you miss a day and get in trouble. Come on, put on your shoes. It’ll be fine.” Adam found he couldn’t argue, so he put on his shoes, drank his coffee, and stayed quiet when they got in Dave’s car. Adam still wasn’t sure what was going on with Tommy-did he do something wrong? Was Tommy punishing him for getting so drunk? Tommy was rubbing his eyes and gulping his coffee, so Adam felt like he couldn’t ask.
The trip was long and Adam didn’t say much during it. He sipped some water and waited for the ride to be over. It seemed to take forever. Tommy stuck by him, but didn’t try to make him talk. Adam thought over what he remembered from last night and it made him feel a little sick. He trusted David, and he’d tried to come on to Tommy. Maybe he should have done more.
When they switched buses to the one that took them straight to Disney, Adam whispered “Are we okay?” Tommy looked over and squeezed his hand.
“I’m not mad at you.” Adam wasn’t sure that was really an answer, but Tommy continued. “We still need to talk more. But I really just wanted to get you ready for work. Are you going to be okay?” Adam nodded, feeling relieved that Tommy wasn’t angry. He really would be okay, even though he felt like shit and he had to be a walker today before the parade. He could make it if Tommy wasn’t mad at him.
When they made it to the Magic Kingdom, Adam pulled Tommy into a hug before they went their separate ways. The day was hell-Adam couldn’t really eat because of his weak stomach, and the heat didn’t help. He just tried drinking as much water as possible and resting between walking. Then he had to do the parade. He thought he did okay, but it was probably the most miserable he’d ever been at Disney. When he met up with Tommy, they had to take the bus back. “Carla’s meeting us at the bus stop,” Tommy said after they kissed. “That okay with you?”
“Sure,” Adam said, like it wouldn’t be. He liked Carla fine even if he never really saw her. He liked Tommy’s friends, but he wondered if he needed to see them more. Tommy was scared to meet his friends now. “I need to see your friends more. I’m sorry.” Tommy looked over at him but didn’t say anything, just smiled a little and shrugged. Adam didn’t say anything else.
When Carla picked them up they sat in the back seat and Tommy held his hand. Adam felt almost insanely grateful for it, weak as he was. He needed to eat now, and he needed Tommy. He had to really talk to him now, but he only had about ten more minutes before they got to Tommy’s. He could hold on that long, he knew he could.
As soon as they got in he spoke up. “I’m so sorry. I’m sorry I got drunk. I’m sorry-you barely spoke to me all day, tell me what I did wrong. I don’t remember a lot after David tried something. What did I do?” He felt the misery that had been eating at him all day, and he didn’t know how to deal with it. I’m so sorry, whatever I did.”
Tommy looked at him, then took two steps and held him tight. “I’m sorry. I was trying to help you get ready for work. I wasn’t angry, I just wanted to help. I couldn’t talk about it on the bus, I didn’t want everyone at Disney hearing our problems. I love you, I’m not mad. And you didn’t do anything. You just stayed close to me.”
“But we’re having problems, you just said so. Did I stay too close? What did I do?” He gripped Tommy closer. “I’m scared I’m going to lose you. You’re not going to leave me, are you? I suck at this, I don’t know what I’m doing, baby.” Tommy moved up to kiss him as Adam whispered “I don’t know what I’m doing. I don’t know.”
“I won’t leave you,” Tommy said. “We just…not everything’s perfect, that’s all. We still haven’t really talked, and I need for us to. But I’m worried about you right now. Did you eat? Are you hungry? I’ll fix you something, I’ll do anything you need me to do.”
Adam’s stomach growled, but he didn’t want to eat. He didn’t want to let go, and he didn’t fucking want Tommy changing the subject. “I don’t care,” he said. “I don’t care that I need to eat. You’re mothering me, and you don’t have to.” He felt Tommy go still in his arms and he started backing off. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry, but I can fix something for myself when I’m ready. I’m glad you took care of me this morning. I am. But I’m better now.” Adam took a deep breath. “At least, I’m sort of better. Can we go to your room? We’ll talk now.”
Tommy led him back to his room, his hand in Adam’s, and Adam held on tight. He didn’t want to let go, he didn’t want Tommy to let go. When they got back to Tommy’s room, they quietly stripped and lay down in bed. Adam wrapped his arms around Tommy and whispered “I don’t know how to do this. I don’t know how to love someone without taking them over. Brad…he didn’t like it. Drake didn’t like it, I lost nearly everyone I liked. I know everyone thinks I’m a slut, but I was trying to find someone to love. I swear it’s true. And I love you, and I’m scared you’ll leave me too.”
“I won’t,” Tommy said, and he kissed Adam’s jaw, nuzzling him. “I know I have problems, and I was probably too cold this morning. I was just trying to help. We didn’t…I let you sleep more because you were so wasted and I didn’t want to wake you up until I had no choice. I just didn’t want you to get fired for a no call, no show.”
“I almost don’t care if they do,” Adam said. “But yeah…thank you. I shouldn’t have gotten so wasted. And you didn’t answer me. What did I do?” Tommy shook his head. “I didn’t do anything?”
“No. You were great, except you kept drinking. You didn’t really talk after that, you just kept slamming them back. I was worried.” Tommy rubbed his back, then pulled back. Adam could see the worried expression on his beautiful face. It hurt that he made Tommy upset. “It upset you, I knew it would. But you were great. You let me handle it and you didn’t get out of control.”
“I wanted to,” Adam said, unable to hold it in any longer. “I wanted to hit him too. I wanted to…how dare he do that, you know? He saw you come in with me, he must have. Why did he do that? He’s supposed to be our friend. What an asshole.” He felt hopeless anger well up in him, even though it was over and Tommy had taken care of it. “I love you. I love how you left him like that and came to me. I was so happy.”
“I wouldn’t have done anything else,” Tommy said, his voice quiet. “I won’t leave you. I need you to understand that. I didn’t even leave Isaac, he dumped me. And it nearly killed me, and I have to trust…” Tommy had to take a deep breath then, and Adam pulled him in closer, feeling him tremble. “I have to trust you won’t leave me. I need you. I know I got mad about what happened with Isaac, but…I need you. I need you so much it scares me.”
“I feel the same way,” Adam whispered back. “I fell so hard, Tommy, and so fast. You…I think you’re perfect. I want to just love you forever, and I don’t know…nobody’s let me do that. Am I scaring you? I’m probably freaking you out. We haven’t been together long. We probably don’t even really know each other.”
“ We’re learning. We don’t know everything about each other, that’s true. But no, you’re not freaking me out,” Tommy said, looking up at him. “And remember something-we made a list of dealbreakers, and punching my asshole ex wasn’t on it. So don’t worry. Just…know that I won’t leave. Okay? You’re an amazing person and I’ve never met anyone like you.”
“Never met anyone like you either,” Adam said, and then he thought about what Tommy had told him about Isaac. “Tommy,” he said. “If you don’t want to tell me that’s okay…but what made you go for Isaac? And what made you stay?”
Tommy went stiff in his arms for a minute, every muscle tensed, and Adam thought that maybe she should have shut the fuck up. The seconds dragged on and Adam was just waiting for Tommy to tell him to fuck off. Then Tommy shifted, moving so Adam was spooning him from behind. Adam wondered why Tommy couldn’t face him, and then stopped thinking when Tommy’s soft, hesitant voice spoke up.
“When I met Isaac he just...he had a glow to him. He always seemed happy and he had this way of making me feel important. We were just band mates and friends until he asked me to take him to my place for a drink. He kissed me that night, and then it just went further. He left his wife and we spent a lot of time together. I told you that he kept me apart from my friends, but it was so slow that I barely even noticed. I never saw it coming.” Tommy shifted in his arms. “I loved him a lot. Losing him and then my band hurt so much.” Tommy turned around then, and didn’t meet Adam’s eyes. “You…you can remind me of Isaac. The good parts of him, anyway.”
Adam held his breath, waiting for the rest, and then he relaxed. “I wish you could have been with someone who didn’t hurt you so bad, “he said. “But…I remind you of him? I know you said the good parts, but…how?”
Tommy looked at him then. “You’re strong like him. You make me feel safe. But he misused it, he wound up tearing me down. And I love it when you take care of me, but past a point I feel like I could disappear.” Tommy bit his lip. “I don’t know how to explain it. But I don’t feel like you’re tearing me down.”
Adam was quiet for a minute. “I would never mean to,” he finally said. “I would never be cruel to you or leave you with nothing. I want to take care of you, but yeah. I guess we’ll find out together where the line is.” He went in to kiss Tommy and his stomach growled. Tommy giggled and he sighed. “Fuck. I’m starving.”
“I’ll fix you something now,” Tommy said, getting out of bed.
“I can fix it, you don’t have to-“
“I want to,” Tommy turned to face him, t-shirt in hand. “Let me take care of your, okay? Let me take care of you just this once.”
Then he left Adam in bed, and he thought You take care of me all the time.
Tommy stared at the stuff inside his fridge, wondering what the hell he had to make. David and him never really spent a lot of time on grocery shopping, so it was a little bare. Finally he grabbed some cheddar. When Adam wandered into the kitchen in his shorts and t-shirt, he had a grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup waiting for him. “Thank you,” he said, and sat down. Tommy drank a Coke while Adam ate the sandwich and all of the soup. “I’m starving, sorry.”
“It’s okay,” Tommy realized he had barely eaten too, but he really didn’t care. “It’s getting kind of late. Do you want to stay the night? I think Dave’s getting back from his jam soon, so we won’t have the place to ourselves.” Adam looked up from his dinner.
“I think I might have to go home just so I can have clean clothes. I don’t want to, I’d rather stay with you.” Adam slid his hand across the table and Tommy held it. “I need to get the rest of my clothes on. I’m sorry I have to go.” Adam pulled himself up, walking back to Tommy’s room in his briefs. Tommy watched him, but didn’t get back up.
When Adam came back, dressed and ready to go, Tommy hugged him goodbye until Dave came through the door. Adam pulled back then, kissed him and said “See you tomorrow.” Tommy nodded as Adam left.
“What’s going on with Prince Charming?” Dave said, and Tommy shrugged. “Hey, you guys fighting?” Tommy shook his head. “Then what’s up bro?”
“I just wish he could’ve stayed, is all.” Tommy went into the kitchen and started cleaning up. “Fuck. I’m exhausted but I have to eat. Can we nuke some sliders and watch TV before I go to bed?” He felt Dave come behind him and pat him on the shoulder.
“Sure. Anything you want.”
When Tommy went to bed that night, he curled around his pillow. He wanted Adam to be holding him, after what they had said to each other, all the secrets they had spilled. It seemed wrong to be separate now. Tommy thought about Adam holding him close and put his hand around his cock. He imagined Adam spreading him out, sliding inside him, and he came, gripping the pillow. “Fuck,” he said. He didn’t imagine that getting closer to Adam would make him feel lonelier, but it did.
Tommy turned away from the wet spot and went to sleep.
