“This is ridiculous.” Eros glared at the piles of paperwork stacked in neat rows across the surface of his desk. He’d been working for hours, and he hadn’t seen any of them shrink in the slightest. In fact, they seemed to be getting bigger.
“Its one day a year. Stop whining.”
Eros scowled at his assistant, eyes narrowing as he took in the stack of paper in Kevin’s hands. “Easy for you to say. I don’t see you sitting here with me.”
“Seeing as I’m not the God of Love, I should think not.” Kevin set the newest additions on the far left stack, where it towered several inches over the rest.
Eros eyed the growing stack, silently willing it to burst into flame.
Kevin sighed, retreating to his own desk on the far side of the room. “You’re wasting time, sir.”
With a huff, Eros leaned back in his chair, running ink stained fingers through his hair. “What happened to the good old days when I got to shoot arrows at people?”
“Considering you missed more often than not, I think the Higher Up’s decided your accuracy rating could only get better with the stamping method.”
Eros straightened with a growl. “You’re hilarious. I’ll have you know that I was a superb marksman.”
“King Arthur would beg to differ, sir.”
“That was one time!” Eros shoved out of his chair, pacing back and forth in front of his desk, the piles of paperwork a looming wall of obligation. “But seriously, this is ridiculous. How do they expect me to deal with all of this in one day?” He shoved another hand through his hair. “Nick gets a whole month and I’m stuck with one day? I think I should sue.”
Kevin snorted. “And you think you have a lot of paperwork now?”
Eros scowled. “You’re not helping.”
Kevin took a deep breath, long fingers massaging his temples. “Think of it this way, sir. You may have only one day, but at least you’re not portrayed to the world as an old fat guy.”
“That would make me feel better, if people didn’t see me as a naked toddler with wings,” Eros pointed out, a reluctant smile pulling at the corners of his mouth.
“You win some, you lose some, sir.” Kevin returned the light smile before letting it fade, and pointed to Eros’ desk. “Now back to work.”
“You’re my underling,” Eros muttered as he slunk back behind his desk and dropped into his plush leather chair. “Yet I’m the one being bossed around.”
“Someone needs to make sure actual work gets done,” Kevin retorted, but Eros didn’t miss the way pale blue eyes gleamed.
Eros jerked his eyes away before he could be caught staring, clearing his throat and grabbing a handful of forms off the closest pile.
He went through them quickly, slamming the stamp down hard as he vented his frustration. True Love, True Love, Unrequited, Just Friends, Fling, Still Going Strong. The paperwork blurred as he read through hundreds of relationships waiting for his stamp of approval, and every one leaving him more and more frustrated as the one he dreaded and longed for the most never showed up.
It was bound to happen some time. Pausing, Eros stole a quick peek at Kevin. With curly black hair and bright blue eyes, Kevin was somebody’s wet dream waiting to happen. And every Valentine’s Day Eros stamped at least ten different requests for Kevin’s affection, heart turning over in his throat as each one came up Just Friends, Just Friends, Unrequited, Just Friends. Every Valentine’s Day that left Kevin single was a relief, fueling Eros’ hope that he still had time, that it wasn’t too late.
Only Eros knew it couldn’t last forever, that one day someone would catch Kevin’s eye, and then it would be all over since there was no way Eros would be able to avoid giving it his stamp of approval. And it would kill him, only he couldn’t seem to come up with the right thing to say, the words that would make Kevin see him as something more than just his whiny boss.
It was so stupid, since as the God of Love he should have been able to handle this easily, only things were never easy when it came to Kevin, who was responsible and dedicated, putting up with Eros because it was his job and if there was anything Eros knew about Kevin it was he never failed to do his job.
“Eros. Hello? Eros!”
Eros jerked and narrowly missed knocking over his coffee cup, catching the mug before it could spill lukewarm coffee all over his paperwork. “What!” Eros snapped, heart pounding as Kevin stared down at him. When had he moved?
“I’ve been talking to you for almost five minutes. Did you hear a word I said?” Kevin wasn’t even glaring at him, his face carefully blank, which was even worse than if he had been glaring.
“I’m sorry, Kevin.” Eros shook his head, hoping to rattle some coherent thoughts loose. “I was…thinking.”
A dark brow lifted. “What were you thinking about?”
Eros flushed. “Nothing.”
Blue eyes narrowed. “You were ignoring me because you were thinking about nothing.”
“Yes…I mean no. Uh…”
Kevin rolled his eyes. “Seriously, who ever made you the God of Love is an idiot.”
Eros half stood when Kevin started moving, only instead of walking away Kevin circled around his desk and Eros had only a second to process the press of hands on his shoulders before he was pushed back into his chair. “What-,”
His mouth went dry when Kevin promptly climbed onto his lap and tugged his head back before seizing his mouth in a rough kiss. It hurt at first, their teeth clacking together before they got the hang of it, and by then Eros couldn’t think beyond the press of lips and tongue and oh yes-
Eros whined when Kevin pulled back, would have followed if fingers didn’t tighten in his hair and hold him in place. “I’m sick of waiting for you. I’ve been waiting for years, but clearly I’m going to have to make the first move.” Kevin leaned in until they were almost nose to nose. “Eros, I’m hopelessly in love with you and have been for quite some time.”
Thoughts whirling from the kiss and the sudden painful hope that maybe things would be going his way, Eros frowned. “You can’t be in love with me. Your file would have been submitted for me to stamp if you were.”
Kevin smiled, and it was a terrifying smile, making Eros’ heart pound and his body tingle in all sorts of interesting places. “Just because they never reached you doesn’t mean they were never submitted.”
Eros scowled. “You stole them.”
“I was waiting for you to make the first move. Although I don’t know where I got the idea that the God of Love would know anything about relationships, and I’m starting to think it wasn’t skill that landed you this position.” Kevin rolled his eyes again. “Now stop gaping and kiss me. I think I’ve waited long enough, don’t you?”
Eros couldn’t think of a better way to pass the time while he waited for his brain to catch up.
