Uhm... it's been a super long time since I updated last. I'm sorry. I fail. I keep starting entries and then dropping them in favor of other activities. Things have happened: like the first mate left and we all got battlefield promotions. One of those things everyone thinks about and never expects to have actually happen. I think we make a happier crew this way, though. Unfortunately the sudden transition from super deckhand to novice boatswain has been stressful to me. Mainly cuz I didn't have time to prepare and I feel like I don't really know what it means to be a good boatswain. But I think I'm getting things done and I'm trying to make her a happier boat. Oiling lots of wood.
I'm thisclose to finishing my sheath which is very exciting. Then I can look as salty as my coworkers.
I'm off today and was off yesterday and I feel like I spent most of my time in the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan seeing people off. Yesterday, I escorted Zoe there. She came to the City for a couple of days with a friend from college. Today, I took Carl there. I feel like I need another day off. I spent Saturday night on the Lettie G. Howard with Carl since he's working there. He got a job there as deckhand almost immediately after quitting his job in Miami. I'm a little bitter that he got a new job so quickly and easily but I think it's a great job for him and it means we'll be close all summer. The Lettie sails out of the same marina that the Clearwater docks in whenever she's in the City.
Something that makes me sad, people on this boat still refer to their last boat as 'We.'
Everyone on board seems to be somewhat caught up in what they're doing next. It's making me a little stressed. I'm not so good at looking to the future. It's one of those things I do when I'm unhappy and need to be somewhere else. But the Clearwater is where I've been wanting to be. I'm also not interested in sitting on my ass for 5 months again. So, I'm filling out applications. Slowly. My list at the moment, Lady Washington (West Coast), Tole Mour (Catalina Island, CA), Seamans (heading for Tahiti), Adventuress (WA) and Ocean Classrooms (2 or 3 boats bound for the Caribe).
