Better be Gryffindor!

I had a hard time sorting myself into the right Hogwarts house this weekend, even though I know deep down which one I belong in. Those faulty on-line sorting hats most often proclaim me a Gryffindor, but I take those results with a shaker of salt. My Ayurvedic physician tells me I’m predominately “Pitta” or Fire element, whereupon I protest; highly ( Read more... )

Wow, Zia, what a beautifully written essay-- I love your introspection, I love this experience that proved to you a bit of who you are. I can just picture you climbing- your descriptions are so good. Just wow.

Thanks for reading Camry. How's the running going? Good, I hope.

The running is good. For me, the challenge to being more fit is eating more healthfully. I can run all I want, but if I'm eating mountains of Twinkies, I'll still be 60 pounds overweight, and it's really hard to run in Houston heat and humidity carrying 60 pounds of insulation.

I just want to say that you can do it! I checked out your journal (albeit very briefly since I had to pack for this trip Friday, was away all weekend, and have to work today. Sorry for the lack of comment.) and I'm impressed by how many miles you can run! It seems like you know what's holding you back - like my lack of boldness holds back my climbing- so you're right on the brink of taking charge. *big hug*

I really enjoyed reading this, Zia. Not the least of why being the fact that I could NEVER do what you do. For lots of reasons. But your descriptions truly are beautiful, and I could picture it so vividly. You must be very proud of yourself. That was an amazing accomplishment. I think you are truly courageous simply being out there doing what you are doing, whether you lead or not. Plenty of us keep our feel planted firmly on the ground and admire you greatly! Wonderful job!!

Awww, thanks Moonette. Thanks for reading and thanks for the compliment. I do love climbing, and the trials and lessons the sport offers, but life offers so many opportunities outside of climbing to be brave and to learn from. I'm sure you do some pretty amazing things with your feet on the ground. : ) On that note, I'm looking forward to your Oliver story coming out!

I didn't get a chance to read this yesterday. What a wonderful ephiphany you had at the crux. I love the comparison with Harry! It's amazing when we find our true selves -isn't it? The powerful energy force that is always there - but so hard to access sometimes. It's fire in the belly indeed.

I really love how you described your weekend - it was exhilerating how you had the tough day and then the triumphant day. Your honesty and your careful description of your feelings and surroundings made this a moving piece to read.

I'm glad the four elements inspired you!

St. Margarets, It’s funny that I wrote this piece after returning home on Sunday night and didn’t really realize I’d had an “epiphany” until I shut down the computer and plopped in bed. I lay awake on my pillow and suddenly realized I’d had one! It felt quite serendipitous to be in line with the Fluff thread, even though I had planned on warming the bench this week.

Describing rock climbing to a non-rock climbing audience is always a worthy challenge. I have to pause and think about whether I’m conveying my situation and surroundings-- much more so than if I wrote for climbers. It’s a good exercise for writing fanfics where you also want the reader to be in the moment.

Thanks for reading and commenting. It’s so nice to hear what people think of your writing.
