As a rule, I don't exercise on Monday nights. Yes, even though I'm the type who can scarcely sit still for 3 seconds put together, it's nice to have a night to just curl up and relax. Last night, however, I was in a funk. I didn't want to read. I didn't want to write. I wanted to...
...attack one of those long forgotten projects I was tired of looking at every time I opened the spare closet. I started by working on my little sister's pillow shams (to match the duvet cover I taught her to make this summer) until Cream Beauty crapped out on me again due to some unresolved timing issues with the bobbin. Cream Beauty--that's what I like to call my 1970's Singer sewing machine with all metal moving parts that I scooped up on ebay. It's the same as the one on which my mom taught me to sew, so there's sentiment involved, and I got it for a reasonable price. Last night, however, the only sentiments went like this:
Cachunk! Arrrggh! It garbed up the thread enough times to annoy me, until I finally decided that I'd best resort to doing some hand sewing instead. No worries, I had another long-forgotten sewing project on hand that would do just the trick...
The Slipper Project.
We're strictly a "shoes off" house. There are several reasons for this: 1) It really saves wear and tear on the floors. 2) It saves cleaning time, which is enough reason for me right there! 3) There's some crazy statistic such as...90% of the toxins that enter a household enter on the soles of shoes.
On that note, I'd decided long ago that I really wanted to provide a basket of guest slippers by the front door. A cozy thought, no? So I niffled out
this little project online at Martha Stewart (no, I don't lurk there). Finally, I found the colorful wool felt section at the local quilt shop and I was all set to go! I would make a pair in every size and color!
That was two years ago.
But--wahoo!--these two pair have finally materialized:
And since I was feeling delusional again riding that high, tonight after work I bought a couple more color combos:
As you can see by the price tags, they come out to about $4.00 a pair for anone who might want to make them. Unlike in the article, I used two layers of felt to achieve the required thickness, mainly because I couldn't find the specified thickness anywhere and secondly, because I liked the idea of combining colors.
Anyway, carry on...
