[ History ] :
Zi, the world Van comes from, was originally populated by Zoidians, who were the natives essentially, and lived across the world in a technologically advanced society based on machines they called Zoids. The Zoidians are suddenly seemingly wiped out by something called the Death Surer and the world is left in ruins till some time later humans crash land. The details of that landing are lost over the centuries but when humans arrive they make use of the Zoids left, developing their own and over time forming two big powers: the Guylos Empire and the Helic Republic. These are basically the only two powers on Zi, minus a few minor unallied border towns, and they dominate the planet. Unfortunately they’ve been at war with each other on and off since their inception and at the moment they’re right in the middle of it.

Van spent the first fourteen years of his life in the Wind Colony; one of the most remote settlements on Zi deep in the desert of the Helic Republic. It’s a quiet, tiny little place made up of windmills and vegetable farms. Van’s father, a Republican soldier, is killed defending it five years before the series starts and devastated by his death Van vows to become the greatest Zoid pilot ever.

At fourteen, the start of the series, on a regular exploration of the surrounding desert Van is chased by bandits into some ruins near his village. There he finds a hidden room and two capsules: one contains an Organoid (a special kind of Zoid which can fuse with other, bigger, Zoids and make them stronger. Thought just to be legends) and the other a girl who calls herself Fiona. Fiona can’t seem to remember anything about who she is, how she got there, or how long she’s been there: all she can remember is something called the “Zoid Eve”. Hungry for adventure, or really any excuse to leave his village, Van sets off with the pair of them and a Zoid called a Shield Liger to find it. Along the way they run into a mercenary called Irvine, who initially tries to take Zeke, and a greedy transporter called Moonbay who join them.

In trying to find the Zoid Eve Van and his friends become more and more involved in the war. Moonbay’s lust for cash means they begin to frequently hire themselves out to the Republican army trying to hold off advancing Imperial forces in a series of campaigns. Its because of this Van meets Raven; a young man working for Prozen, the imperial Minister for Defense, who has a black Organoid of his own he calls Shadow. The two become fierce rivals and in their frequent battles Van more than once comes close to death.

The empire launches a strategy to conquer the republican capital of New Helics city in which Van and his friends are again enlisted to help fend them off. During the siege the Emperor, back in the capital, dies and his grandson Rudolf (who’s described as “not even ten years old yet”) takes the throne and declares a ceasefire. Prozen, Raven and the rest of the Imperial army are forced to withdraw and the Republic basks in their momentary peace.

Prozen it’s revealed now has real ambitions for power. The Emperor has left him as Regent to the prince and Prozen intends to use his power to have the prince publically assassinated by soldiers masquerading as Republican forces. By doing this Prozen plans to take the throne and restart the war; however a set of bandits from Van’s journey likewise plan to kidnap the prince and ransom him as revenge for being tricked during a previous campaign.
They kidnap Rudolf during Prozen’s attempt and while being pursued by Raven are forced to put the prince into Van’s care. Discovering who he is Van and his friends promise to take Rudolf back to Guylos, the capital of the empire, so he can be crowned, putting their search for Zoid Eve on hold. Prozen however makes their journey increasingly difficult: sending out Raven, using the imperial ring (given to the heir apparent as proof of ascendency) to prove Rudolf is dead and declare him an imposter enabling him to send the full brunt of the army after them. All the while we learn Prozen is using Zoidian technology to try and raise the same Death Surer that destroyed the ancient race.

Arriving finally in Guylos, Van and his friends are separated the night before the coronation when Van and Fiona take off to a secret laboratory Prozen has built thinking it might contain Zoid Eve; instead they’re ambushed and find the facility holds the Death-Surer. We discover Fiona is an ancient Zoidian and as part of her memory comes back the Death-Surer is awakened by its desire to kill all Zoidians.

They escape but are again blocked by Raven while Prozen’s coronation begins. Likewise Moonbay, Irvine and Rudolf are trapped by imperial forces. Van is successful in defeating Raven and his friends break through the barrage of imperial forces to converge on the coronation. As they arrive, Prozen reveals the Death Surer and possessed by its ‘malevolent spirit’ begins to rampage on the city. Discovering Prozen’s treachery Van and his friends are aided in defeating him, by the imperial army as well as reserve forces from their allies in the republic. Using the unique features of Van’s Zoid they’re able to destroy Prozen and his Death-Surer.

Van’s just saved the day so he’s pretty happy with himself. He’s now ready to get back to his original quest, the one he put on hiatus with this whole Emperor business, to find the Zoid Eve. He’s vanished mid pre-coronation to start up his journey again and no one’s looking for him- but it doesn’t look like he’s going to get far…

[ Personality ] :
Having spent the majority of his life in one of the planet’s most remote settlements Van has an incredible curiosity and lust for adventure. His positive, reasonably carefree attitude, leaves him immature and almost fearless. He speaks, acts and fights well before he thinks and is driven solely by emotion rather than logic. He has an appreciation for the simple pleasures of life: water, food, and sleep, most likely because of the desolate nature of the region he originates from.

His positivity, optimism and sheltered background lead him to believing in the innate goodness of people and a simplified definition of right and wrong. The confrontations he faces along his journey make it evident Van finds it hard to grasp the notion that there are people who are just bad, that bad things happen to good people, that no matter who you are or what you do you will always hurt someone somewhere and not everything (including life and feelings) is as simple as he’s always believed. This brings Van to make a number of decisions and by the end of the series he’s come to appreciate what he has and most importantly not take the people around him for granted in pursuing his dream.

Van’s loud and blunt but very empathetic to the pain of others. At the very core of his personality is a drive to ‘be the best’ based on an attempt to reconnect with his dead father, the most prominent figure in Van’s life, who was also a pilot. From this Van develops a relentless determination. He wants more than anything to know about his father, to feel as though he would be proud, and for this reason he often becomes vulnerable to characters that would use this against him. Prozen, in first season, uses Van’s father to shake his definitions of right and wrong and his sense of self. His father motivates him and his ambition springs from the desire to feel close to him. This also means on occasion Van can put up blinders and become somewhat selfish often to the detriment of himself and others

On a lighter note he has a big stomach and very little sense of etiquette. His confidence or simply the fact he comes from a small town environment means that he’s not intimidated by high ranking officers, royalty, experts, bandits, or politicians of any sort. He has a tendency to nickname the highest ranking characters of the series “buddy”, “old man”, “old guy” or “gramps” etc.

[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
Van has a great natural talent for piloting Zoids. He also shows an affinity to working with other machines and constructing them. He learns fast, he has legendarily good luck, and in a scrape can use effective problem solving. However his most strategic plans are only brought on by his worst and most desperate encounters: it’s only after an initial brash assault, cornered with little left, Van actually takes the time to think about what he’s doing.

More than once in first season he’s been seen to have a tendency to….well….hallucinate, very vividly, and mostly for comedic affect. This has on more than one occasion driven him off track. These hallucinations are mostly bought on by Van’s large appetite, he cant go very long without good regular meals and he’ll definitely let you know when he needs one.

From a life time in the desert and months of travelling Van can sleep almost anywhere though he snores very loudly, he’s used to having to get up and go at a moments notice at all hours of the day and night, he can take extreme heat reasonably well (Zi being a planet comprised mostly of deserts, with a very close, very powerful, sun), and after a season of on foot chase scenes Van has the endurance to run for a good while.

Being from a desert Van’s had little experience with water which could be a problem in Vatheon. He can swim, that’s established, and reasonably well; though his skill and his endurance in that area certainly cant be great, certainly not in large bodies of water.

Van is however just human: no extraordinary bone strength, no abnormally thick skin, no better than average sight or hearing or sense of smell, no special powers, no extraordinary talents (apart from his natural ability with machines) or intellect….Just a bad sense of humor and a loud mouth which often gets him into trouble.

[ Other Important Facts ] : Zeke sticks by him constantly but wont be arriving with him in Vatheon I don’t think…at 7ft, I don’t think he fits into the Vat rules about pets!

[ Sample ] :
[Van was sleeping, contorted to the point of near impossibility and snoring loudly, a pretty normal scene for him under a clear starry sky somewhere in the big rolling desert. Well it would be if he was under a clear starry sky but oddly…

He’s wet, really wet, and the sand isn’t sand at all but…hard? Pushing himself up he blinks, yawning loudly, mouth stretched wide, not really too worried yet and has a gander around. There are streetlights flickering, fascinating obnoxious things like most artificial light in his opinion, and by that logic he’s on a street. He’s still got everything right? He checks. Yep: all four limbs, wiggly toes and fingers, head, the last of his brain cells (as Irvine would say) and groping blindly he can even feel his scraggly mullet. That’s a good sign right? He needs a shower though but meh that’s nothing new...

He taps his boots on the concrete and he can still feel the sand between his sticky toes so he can’t be too far from home. Fumbling there’s something hard in his pocket and digging his hand it he pulls out some kind of star-thingy. Turning it over his first thought is that’s its shiny with little buttons that seem small under his fingers just like on the handle of his hover-board. Looking up the dark, tall, walls of the buildings framing the street he feels a little uncertain just for a second until he spots the bright domed sky. Tilting his head back as far as his neck will allow he gawks]

Holy leapin Ligers! Will you look at that!

[He’s excited now, laughing]

Wow…

[Flopping forward he begins twisting onto his stomach to push himself up onto awkward growing legs with his gloved palms swaying for moment till he gets his balance. He digs his blunt nails against his temple and begins to amble. Zeke and Fiona can’t be far away, he’s absolutely certain, he’s confident if he just turns that corner there or maybe the next one he’ll find them and then they’ll ask someone where they are. His only real concern right now is that he’s hungry, he hopes they aren’t far, he wants a big, warm, breakfast with all the trimmings…hmmm something with syrup would be nice, yeah… He just hopes he doesn’t see any more flying papayas before he sees his friends]

[ Questions? Comments? Concerns? ] : This would be my first time RP-ing on livejournal and my last RP was a long time ago in an AU universe. I don’t totally understand the Vatheon system and I’m obviously rather inexperienced but I'm really willing to try to learn and improve. Don’t know if the app is exactly what you wanted or too long >w<
