Maybe I'm just prejudiced, but I find it upsetting how it seems like a lot of people view America simply as a means to making money. Some use the euphemism "land of opportunity" and "the American Dream". So... a better life is a six-figure income huh? Some people are going to the U.S. not because it's a place they want to live in, but because they ( Read more... )

i disagree. i love capitalism. it's the whole reason my parents came here from taiwan and why all my father's side of the family came and have prospered. the fact htat capitalism does give u an opportunity is the beauty of it and why it's practical. you have to work hard while be vigilant, determined, and motivated to do your best for the future. your comment that capitalism gives material wealth in lieu of morality is completely unfair. you have to admit that without wealth, there would be no such term as moral obligation to give to those less fortunate because everybody would be miserable.

that wasn't really my point. i don't know how to word it, but what I was trying to say was that I don't like how so many people seem to want to go to the U.S. simply because they can make more money there. Of course, this is only my perception and I can't back it up with statistical figures or concrete proof. What else should the U.S. be viewed as, if not $$-land? Well, how about a place with a less-corrupt government, making an effort to be "democratic", relatively much freedom, etc. My parents also came from taiwan, and clearly my childhood has been much more "fortunate" than my parents'. Yearning for a better life in the U.S. by itself is not a problem, but when in fact you don't care about the U.S. other than the fact you can make money there, I think that's an awful viewpoint ( ... )

paraphrasing the words of an indian immigrant i read the other week

i'd rather live in a country where the poor are fat.

and u can also get skin cancer. cue the blame on another industry.

and i dont think you're not getting my point.
okay so you mean money isn't the ultimate evil but it still is evil because of its allure.
im saying you can't blame money the way you are.

you ask for a democratic and less corrupt govt. capitalism has given us that. there will always be cheaters and abusers of the system. you can't let the few give u a jaded view.

"when in fact you don't care about the U.S. other than the fact you can make money there, I think that's an awful viewpoint. "

yes i think u can make money in america, you can also have all those other things like democracy here. most of the people that come here come for both. if they only wanted the former, they can just go to china.

I'm not writing about capitalism, and frankly I was trying to word the original post in an indirect way to give my opinion on a relatively recent event that took place less than half a year ago without specifically saying what it was. I'm not in the mood to try to convince anyone that I'm right, nor will I try to back my assertion that capitalism to the point where people will are corrupted by money is no better than no capitalism at all (if I did feel like it, then I'd do a research project about it).

Simply put, I gave the wrong impression from my original post, and this has spun off topic to the point that I don't care.

I think you DID miss the point. Zhoxy said: "it upsets me when I see people who treat the U.S. as a tool for making money, and don't give a slam otherwise about it." You disagree with that, meaning you DON'T MIND if people come just to funnel $$ and screw off American citizens. That's putting it bluntly, but it's what you said. I hope you really don't mind, because as an American citizen you will be paying a lifetime of taxes that will get funneled off into various things, like social security, medicare and welfare, that you'll never see a cent of ( ... )

first of all, i think your reference to israel and saudi arabia is absurd. i do dislike it when a person walks in a parade with another country's flag but it's his choice to be an idiot ( ... )
