爱好(儿)
I'm confused. I thought 爱好 just meant a hobby, interest or passion in something, but according to Barron's 201 Mandarin Chinese Verbs, it also means: 'to desire to be good; to be particular about being good' (as a VO/SV construction). Or, at least, it means this when an 'r' is added, as in 爱好儿.
Yet.. I couldn't find that meaning of 爱好儿 in the dictionary.
Questions:
Is 爱好儿, as in 'desire to be good', a real word? Used often?
AND
Do you have to pronunce it as 爱好儿, or is it fine without the er? How does it sound? Like "aihaoER" or "aihar" or "aihouur"? I imagine you can't pronunce it as 'har' because it would sound too much like 'haiR', as in 孩儿.
