Field Work

Aug 05, 2008 16:43

Yesterday, I got up at 2:30 to go do field work. It was nice to be out so early, when no one else is awake. Call me crazy, but there's something very tranquil about walking past the lagoon at 3:40 AM. All five of us piled into an F-150 and drove to Vandenburg Air Force Base, which is a pretty nice drive. This is where it gets interesting.

A tale of miscommunication, Bill Bryson, Barack Obama, and military bureaucracy )

Dad used to work for a Canadian military research outfit. Canadians are more apologetic about being unhelpful, but otherwise the experience is just about a dead match. It makes me wonder how good they can possibly be at shooting people if they suck that bad at everything else.

Sounds about right. The gate guards are contractors ... the lowest paid bidder. So their pay is not "I'd be glad to help you", plus they have to deal with cranky people all day.

On the other hand, you can usually get your base passes at least 24 hours in advance, though it may require a second trip. The gate is usually in the phone book, so you can ask for hours, explain your situation, and usually they'll work with you to get you there on time.

Hugs. Hope today goes better.

PS - Point Mugu is suppose to have some interesting diverse wildlife. :)
