I've thought about this a lot, actually.

I can't help but feel very self-absorbed with all this schooling going on. So, one could step back and say that we're going to school to learn how to help other people...there's just this nagging concern that I have that it won't pay off, that we'll have to fight through all this bureaucracy and distraction to accomplish our naive goal.

But then I remember if we fight hard enough, we should be fine. I guess doctors would have that concern less if they plan on seeing patients on a daily basis.

It's also frustrating to see how mismanaged research funding can be. Ideally, you want to give it to a lab that needs it, that will use it wisely, etc., but most of that is not regulated well/difficult to regulate in the first place. Oy vey.

Of course, if we sit back in our hesitation and don't help out, then we won't have anything to show. If we die tomorrow, investment for the future doesn't pan out. My point is, every little bit helps, right? There has to be a balance, between present and future investment, having little causes and big causes...
