When I was at school, we had a block built on the side of a hill. The base of one side was at ground level, the base at the other side was about 2" under ground level. Of course, the below-ground-level side was made the front. To get into the classrooms you had to go down three or four stairs, and then when sitting inside the room you'd be at ankle-level of people walking past.

There was, fortunately, only one classroom at this level, as well as a few miscellanous storerooms etc.

For some reason I never grasped, this was known as the "submarine" room.
