Another quick note..

A few months ago I went to a beethoven concert, which was unusual in that it was designed to be educational - the conductor stopped the action to explain what was going on, point out various elements and how they interplayed and how the whole work was built up.

Since then.. I don't know why, but I'm notice things in music that i'd never noticed before - or at least, not in 4+ years. Back when I used to play, it used to be fairly normal for me to be listening to music and following the main melody, but also up to 3 or 4 other things happening underneath the melody at the same time. More recently though I'd lost this ability - I'd also lost the ability to pick out, say, the trumpet secion and just follow them.

Recently though the ability seems to be coming back, although I'm not entirely sure why. It's wonderful though - music is so much more enjoyable when you're really "in" the music and paying attention to everythign that's happening than when you're just watchign the surface and getting an overview..

I guess it's self-perpetuating too. The more I catch myself doing this, the more I enjoy, the more I try to do it again, the better I get at it..
