hi, I found you via Lou. That is, I am more or less haphazardly seeking out LJ's of people who share one or more of my stated interests (or other if they pop up in my mind) and see if one interest in common also means more general interests in common. Sometimes it does, but also surprisingly often I end up wondering what brought someone to listing certain interest.

As for the writing styles. I was thinking it is a bit like early photogpraphs. People did dress up and for them. The fact that they were way more expensive and for a long time you needed a profesional photographer so it is very understandable people wanted to make a bit of an effort. (I am aware this is not a very good analogy in factuality, since correspondence was quite intensive in earlier times. Not like email and MSN and texting nowadays but not once yearly.)

As for Shakespeare. I believe he would have sounded more like a rural person than a sophisticated townsman to the ears of later work (certainly in speech, quite possibly also in writing). But maybe people perceived it as freeer and more natural? I have very little knowledge of English literature and not at all of Shakespeare reception.

Wow -- then you have quite incredible timing. I've been interested in her for a long time but only recently have I had time to get into her books.

I do think that there is something of an analogy to photography... it's one of those things where we have so many things on top of photography -- video, Internet, etc -- that there are that many more things to juggle. The world is a much more chaotic place now.
