south dakota till wherever i have to stop when i can't take it anymore.
random pitstop (or 2) to sacramento, CA.

historic route 66 to chicago!
(including stops in arizona, new mexico, and western texas as allowed by distance/time/car not overheating. cheezy pitstops abound.)
chicago to lafayette, indiana
lafayette to pittsburgh or morgantown.
morgantown to lynchburg.
according to AAA's fuel trip calculator, it would cost less to buy gas for a car trip than to fly from dc to la. assuming gas prices go up summer (because they always do for the summer), it should cost about the same, plus cheap junk food, plus a campsite or fleabag hotel or two... yeah, not much more expensive for a car trip. i'm more worried about wear to the car or potential overheating in the desert. anyone undertaken a trip like this before? would you recommend it? any problems i should expect (other than the usual run-ins with psychotic drifters at truckstops and speed trap, etc)?
