Summary: Following Fem!Tabris through her journey with the Blight.
I knew I should wake up, but I couldn't; the dark was too warm, too loving, and so wanting. My conscious struggled for freedom from my slumber, trying to hold onto the sounds that tried to pound their way into my heavy skull.
Eventually, my ears woke up, and I heard my cousin's voice call my name.
Next came my eyes: my lids flew open, so Shianni assumed I was awake.
However, I could not comprehend any of the simple things she said.
She then realized what was happening, and threatened to get cold water. Luckily, the sound of her yelling my name a moment later finally woke me up.
"Thank the Maker!" she cried. "I was beginning to worry you'd never wake up."
"I don't want to wake up…" I mumbled, pressing my face back into my pillow.
"Do I need to get water?" Shianni threatened again.
"No, no… just give me a minute to put my mind back together."
"Well, then, make sure you find the bit that says what day today is."
"Um…" I began. "Well, it's definitely not 'Let Xan Sleep In' day…" Shianni rolled her eyes.
I sniffed the air. "Based on your smell… is it 'Get Drunk Really Early' day?"
Shianni crossed her arms and raised a red eyebrow.
"Shows how much you know about your own alienage," she teased, snatching the pillow from beneath my head.
"So seriously, what day is it?" I asked, rubbing my eyes.
"I'm surprised at you!" Shianni said, throwing the pillow at me. "How could you forget the date of your own wedding?"
Suddenly I wasn't so tired.
"What?" I asked, sitting up.
"You're getting married today, cousin. Remember?"
"Obviously not…" I mumbled.
"You'd better get ready," Shianni said, moving towards the chest at the foot of my bed.
"Do I have to get married?" I whined.
"Would you rather stay a child your entire life?" she asked, pulling a dress out of the chest.
By human standards, it was not a very elaborate dress, but it was the perfect wedding gown for an alienage marriage.
"Only by our standards," I muttered.
"Oh? Who else's standards were you thinking of?" Shianni asked.
"I don't know."
Shianni walked back over to me.
"Come on, I'll help you get ready at my place," she said.
I nodded once, and then got up to follow her.
I walked into my house's main room, where Cyrion waited.
"My little girl's going to become a woman today," my father said with a smile.
"Come by when you can, would you?" Shianni said, before leaving.
Cyrion embraced me, kissing the top of my head.
"I only wish your mother could be here to see this," he admitted. He chuckled. "Although, knowing her, she'd steal you away so she could have you all to herself."
I could see his eyes begin to moisten.
"Must I marry?" I asked.
"Just like Adaia…" he sighed. "Yes, my Xannie, you must."
"Who is he?" I tried.
"Your fiancé? He's not a bad man at all. He's from Highever. And quite handsome, too." He smiled. "You'll like him, I promise. I picked him myself."
"What difference does that make?" I asked.
"A big one. It was either the elders chose, or I did. I assure you, you're better off having me choose."
"Thanks, I guess."
"Before you leave, take these." He handed me a pair of leather boots. They were old, but they had been kept very well. The intricate designs stitched in the hide were slightly faded, but still beautiful.
"They were your mother's," he continued. He grinned, and hugged me again. "My little girl…" he murmured. "Now go with Shianni. I'll see you when the time comes."
