everything's shut
Originally uploaded by zevinboots I'm told that the laws governing the mandatory closing of business of Sunday are very complicated, but the result is that pretty much everything ends up shutting down on Sundays. A few pharmacies stay open, and there's a new supermarket called OpenCor that - true to its name - is almost always good for emergency grocery runs. But, for just about anything else, forget it. Until Monday, that is.

Busses and the Metro still run, and the town is still bustling with tourists, young lovers, and people walking their dogs. But the atmosphere is just calmer, like a certain crucial kind of pressure has been taken off, if only for a day.

[On a related note, hypothetically, if one forgot to purchase a steam iron before everything shut on Saturday evening, and if buying hangers completely slipped one's mind ... then one might just end up running the hot water in the shower, with one's dress shirt draped over the back of a chair that barely fits in the space between the toilet and the sink...]
