Happy New Year's, all

Dec 31, 2006 23:51

I was going to try and post right at midnight, for the challenge of the thing, but I got bored.  So ....

HAPPY NEW YEAR!  (noisemakers!)

So.  I can already give you a prognosis on my New Year, based on the following facts (this is the bullshit part).

1-3.  Later deleted because, damn, was I hallucinating.  Worst flu I've ever had.

4.  Poppy Z. Brite SUCKS.

It's not the subject matter -- I'm a huge Anita Blake fan, so I love that sort of thing -- I mean, it was enjoyable for a while, but I have trouble empathizing with people who have no value for each other or themselves, who do horrible, inexplicable things and apparently erase their sense of guilt by going "Okay, whatever, I'll move on."  It's "Lost Souls" that I'm reading and I'm on the part where Laine just died.  I liked Jason for half the book and now he can go crawl through a wood chipper into a vat of rubbing alcohol for all I care.

5.  I am trying to reassure myself that college will not be the death of me, but the fact is I'm scared out of my mind.

Here's to a better year than it's been for me tonight.  Here's to peace.  Here's to your child and my child too.  Here's to finding a common tradition among the people of the world.  Here's to common ground.

I propose a toast to keeping the past in our memories where it belongs, and moving on into a world that knows better now.

I'll drink to keeping the beauty of our shared histories ever-present among us, to forgiveness and revision and to being unafraid to say "I'm sorry" or "I was wrong" or "I love you" or "Let's find a way."

Happy New Year, United States.  Happy New Year, United Kingdom.  Happy New Year, Ireland.  Happy New Year, Australia; Happy New Year, Canada; and a very Happy New Year to the countries whose official language doesn't know what I'm saying in any case.

We don't celebrate the same holy days, except this one.  Whenever and wherever we celebrate, we all know when a new year has begun, when we can turn over a new leaf and say, "Let's start something fresh."

We'll take a cup of kindness yet, for the sake of Auld Lang Syne.
