My mantra this morning as I walked the rain to the tube was "I hate early mornings and I hate the rain and I hate the cold and I hate london" over and over in a steam-train rhythm that under differing circumstances might have been comforting

i don't hate it very often, but i'll share what hate i have.

Sodden, pelted, and disgruntled; fingers frozen into painful claws around my bicycle handlebars, I was similarly revived as I passed through a warm cloud from a pavement steam vent at the same time as a single vertical plane of sunlight and a flaming red dogwood leaf. Suddenly everything was glistening.
