OOC-On Ryoji- TL;DR wall of text ahead!
So I thought to make a reference post about Ryoji, as Persona 3, while much more popular, might not be quite as popular in most circles. I would make a post about him. As such, THERE ARE SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT. SHOULD YOU WANT TO FIND THIS OUT ON YOUR OWN BY PLAYING THE GAME, PERSONA 3, DO NOT CONTINUE. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. Stickying this forevar.
First off, I'd like to say that everyone should kinda think of him as something similar to a Bleach! shinigami in a gigai. He doesn't have a real 'body', per se, and the fact he has this kind of body now is thanks to the Protagonist, Minato Arisato. Thanatos is his real form, the form given to him by Nyx, but things start to get confusing from here, so just go like this.
Current Ryoji Body: From Minato-Death fusion
Thanatos Body: Real Form, From Nyx
He'll be able to transform between the two once he gets a better control of his powers, but for the moment, he's in the Ryoji form.
Ryoji first came into being ten years from the beginning Persona 3, in the 1999 under Gekkokaun High School in Iwatoudai, in a secret lab managed by the Kirijou Group. The Kirijou Group was performing experiments on the enemies in Persona 3, the Shadows. The experiments were an attempt to draw on the massive powers the Shadows had, including the ability to alter and manipulate the fabric of time-space. However, the lead researcher, Dr. Kirijou, for the project had nihilistic plans in store for the Shadows and attempted to end the world. However, one brave scientist did not want that to happen. During the experiment made to create The Herald of The End (Death) he sacrificed his life and set off an explosion as the final experiment was underway. The result of the explosion created the hidden time, the Dark Hour, and the Tower of Demise, Tartarus, that would plauge the world for ten more years to come.
Death escaped the explosion, but as the experiment was incomplete, it was unstable and began to break off into pieces. These pieces became powerful Shadows, taking on the aspect of the I through XII Arcanas, becoming known as Greater Arcana Shadows. Wandering confused, Death encountered Aigis, the animotronic Anti-Shadow Weapon. Aigis and Death fought within the Dark Hour, but she was not able to destroy Death, for obvious reasons, but instead sealed the Shadow within the body of a child who happens to be in the Dark Hour. The boy held Death within him for 10 years, Death feeding off of the boy's pre-existing abilites and adding on addtional traits for the boy to use. This boy is better known as Minato Arisato, the Protagonist of Persona 3 and it is at the point where Minato returns to Iwatoudai and Persona 3 starts.
Minato comes back to Iwatoudai for the first time in ten years and, at the time he comes back, it just happens to be the Dark Hour and once again, he is unaffected, almost attuned to that time. However, this time, there are other people who are similar in that fact. These people are called S.E.E.S., the Special Extracuricular Execution Squad and each one has the unique power of Persona, or the ability to call upon your inner self to protect yourself from harm through magic and violence. Minato is thrown into the machinations of S.E.E.S. quickly, as within three days the first Greater Arcana Shadow (Magician) shows up. Being in danger, he sees a boy who urges him on and he awakens to his full power as a Persona User. However, within his first summoning, his starter Persona, Orpheus, is torn to pieces from within to reveal the form of that which was sealed within Minato so long ago, the form of Death as Thanatos. From that point on, he is met by the strange little boy who he met at that time within his dreams, urging him on and warning him about 'The End'.
Due to his unique ability to hold and switch multiple Personas within battle and his ability to constantly stay Zen-calm, Minato is appointed leader. Over the course of the next several months, he leads S.E.E.S. in investigations of the Dark Hour and Tartarus, the mysterious 'Shadow nest' as well as leading 'real world' strikes against the Greater Arcana Shadows in hopes of ending the Dark Hour forever by killing them all. However, when they manage to succeed, a deception is revealed! The manager of S.E.E.S. shows he, also, has nihilistic ends to be met by the destruction of the 12 Greater Arcana Shadows and attemtps to kill S.E.E.S. However, thanks to the Persona User Dog and Aigis' newly found 'real' emotions towards the protagonist, they kill him instead. The game goes on, each member shocked to their core and on the verge of a breakdown, and it is at this time that Ryoji appears.
Ryoji Mochizuki is introduced as a charming and 'cute' transfer student who arrived from overseas. Everyone within the school falls for Ryoji one way or another. Save for two members, even S.E.E.S. is shown to be weak to his charm. Using Ryoji's good natured spirit as a balm for their emotional wounds, S.E.E.S. beigns to recover from the various events that kept getting thrown at them. But then the first full moon after the Kyoto class trip, the world drops another bomb onto S.E.E.S.
During that night's Dark Hour, Ryoji is shown at the site of the old battle against Death, staring at the full moon, feeling at peace. Then Aigis comes in and makes Ryoji remember who he really is. Ryoji is, in fact, the complete form of Death, the Bringer of the Fall and the Shadows are the makers of the Maternal Being, Nyx, who will end the world. Vanishing from the memories of everyone in 'the real world' after that day, he gives S.E.E.S. a choice. Since they cannot defeat Nyx, they can either let him live and live in fear until The Fall or kill his humanity, given by Minato from ten years of being sealed together, removing all the memories of the Dark Hour from their minds and delaying The Fall temporarily. One month after giving them this choice, S.E.E.S. uncovers it's true determination and, canonly, allows Ryoji to live, risking facing Nyx. Ryoji, while thinking that they're stupid for fighting an unwinnable battle, respects their choice and tells them how to fight Nyx; by getting to the top of Tartarus on the date of Janurary 26th, 2010.
S.E.E.S. go up to the top of the Tartarus on that date and are confronted by final form of Ryoji, acting as an Avatar for Nyx. They all fight and Ryoji is defeated. From this point on is the endgame scenario, but needless to say, Ryoji doesn't make any more apperances and then the game ends.
In FES: The Answer, it is revealed that Ryoji and Nyx were drawn to Earth by the collective negative emotions of humanity, built up for thousands of years. Each person has a small part of themselves that longs for Death. When we feel down and we feel we can't go on anymore that is the malice from our hearts calling out for Nyx's sweet death....Within the events of The Answer, this Malice forms a giganitc being that fights against and defeat. However, they realize that they have to change humanity before they can get rid of that Malice forever and let Ryoji and Minato rest in peace.

I thought to put down a bit on Nyx Avatar as well.
Nyx Avatar is, to put it simply, the final form of Ryoji, the form he was forced to take to act at the avatar of Nyx. (Obviously) As a boss fight, it's ridiculous as Ryoji has 13 forms, one for each Arcana from the first up to the 13th, Death. Each of the Arcanas up to the Death Arcana are basically you refighting the Arcana bosses you fought earlier in the game, only with any of the boss' specific special skills. Each time you run his health bar out, he tells you a meaning of the next Arcana he's going to shift over to. Forms 1-12 are nothing very serious.
The 13th and Real Arcana of Nyx Avatar is Death. This is when the bossfight REALLY starts. Nyx Avatar gains resistance to all attacks but almighty (non-elemental for you non-Atlus folk) attacks, 2 moves a turn, power through the roof, the highest form of all the elemental spells and physical attacks, Power Charge (X2 Phys. Attack for one attack) and Magic Charge (X2 magic attack for one attack), additional special attacks and a shitload of health. It's a pretty tough fight (Unless you have Armageddon. Hello 9999 damage, instant kill skill). I won't link vids to save the spoiling, but it is a pretty cool fight, regardless of difficulty.
Nyx Avatar's Special Skills section
Almighty Attack: Nyx's basic attack skill which is present in it's first form and stays through the whole battle. Attacks with an almighty energy shockwave, damaging all in front of it. Damage increases as it goes through all it's forms.
Arcana Shift: Changes all stats when HP reaches 0. Used 12 times.
Moonless Gown: A skill Nyx Avatar uses when it's HP drops to about half on its 13th form. This skill makes a perfect shield which reflects all attacks, even almighty, back at the attacker. Lasts 2-3 turns and takes a move in a turn to set it up and take it down.
Night Queen: Save for the optional boss, Elizabeth's Megidoloan, Night Queen is the strongest attack in the game. It deals massive Almighty damage to all as giant red explosions and can add a random status ailment, even if the character in question is immune to the ailment.
All in all, if Nyx Avatar shows up as a threat in Discedo, it would be a pretty epic bossfight and there would have to be a lot of talking between the people involved. Don't see it happeneing too soon though.
